TheTulaneUniversitySchoolofMedicinebegan astheMedicalCollegeofLouisianainSeptemberof 1834. ItbecamethefirstmedicalschoolintheDeep South,andthefifteenthinthecountry. Therewere onlyelevenstudentsinthefirstclass;tuition,room, andboardcametolessthanfourhundreddollarsper year. Professorsreceivednosalarybutwereinstead compensatedbysellingticketstotheirlecturestothe medicalstudents. The Civil War brought a halt to all medical trainingin1862 TheMedicalCollegeofLouisiana . was fortunate to find financial security. Paul Tulane,a wealthyNewOrleansmerchant, bequeathed $1,250,000 to provide for a new University. By 1884 the variousdepartments oftheMedicalCollegeunitedunderthejurisdic- tion of a new institution, Tulane University. In the early twentieth century Tulane's prominent faculty included Dr. Rudolph Matas, a vascularsurgeon,andDr.IsadoreDyer,awell-noteddermatologistwhowas instrumentalinthedevelopmentoftheleprosariuminCarville,Louisiana Sinceitsfounding163yearsago,astheMedicalCollegeofLouisiana,the TulaneUniversityMedicalSchoolhasundergonemanychanges.TheTulane MedicalCenterwasorganizedin1969tobroadenTulane'scommitmentto medicaleducation,research,andpatientcare. Later,theTulaneMedical CenterHospitalandClinicopened,becomingthefirst suchuniversityhospitalinLouisiana. This300-bed hospitalhasbecomeamajorreferralcenterfortertiary careintheregion. Recently,aportionofthehospital wassoldtoColumbiaHCA.
