Our study, however, is limited to the person and work of the Holy Spirit. UNITY AND TRINITY OF THE GODHEAD Two lines of teaching are found in the New Testament: (1) That which insists on the unity of the Godhead. “We know . . . that there is none other God but one” (1 Cor. 8:4; James 2:19), and (2) That which reveals distinctions in the Godhead—"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, he with you all” (2 Cor. 13:14). These distinctions are shown also at the baptism of Jesus (Matt. 3:16, 17), and in what is called “The great commission” (Matt. 28:19). The Father honors the Son; the Son honors the Father; the Holy Spirit honors the Son—- “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you alt things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 15:26); “Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of (from) himself; but what soever he shall hear, that shall he speak; and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he 5 6 Systematic Theology shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you” (John 16:13, 14). The Father provides redemption through His love (John 3:16), the Son is the Redeemer: the Holy Spirit is the "Executive of the Godhead,” who applies to each believer the benefits of redemption (Heb. 10:7-17). Dr. A. J. Gordon says: "The Son reveals the Father, the Spirit reveals the Son.” (cf. Note 1) THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE SCRIPTURES In such scriptures as John 15:26; 16:13, 14 we are told how God was to provide for us the New Testament canon, or “rule for faith and practice.” Unless we see this we might misinterpret the intent of the Lord in these promises. While we may expect the Holy Spirit to “guide us into all truth,” and to "take the things of Christ and reveal them unto us,” we do well to know what these truths and things are. The center of the revelation would be that He would glorify Christ, then take the things of Christ and set them forth—“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you” John 16:14. He also "will show you things to come” (v. 13). This the Holy Spirit did primarily to the apostles in directing them to record truth, but this ministry is also true for the believer in illuminating the truth and making it vivid to his consciousness. We learn from John 15:26 of the Spirit’s witness to Christ—“When the Comforter is come . . . he shall testify of me”; while in the verse that follows we read: “And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning” (John 15:27). Is this not one of the reasons why the disciples were so desirous of having one to take the place made vacant by the failure of Judas? Introduction 7 [Note their desire—“Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resur rection.” Acts 1:21, 22.] Jesus said they would be witnesses “because they had been with Him from the beginning”; that when the Spirit was come He would guide them into all truth, and would take the things of Christ and show them unto them: that He would glorify Jesus, and show them things to come. This the Holy Spirit did, leaving to us the sacred record in the holy Scriptures. See the faith which Luke placed in these appointed messengers— as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word” (Luke 1:2). Is this not a reason why one qualification for apostleship was that the one so recognized had been a companion of the Lord? Having seen Jesus was one of Paul’s strongest arguments in favor of his apostle ship—“Am I not an apostle? . . . Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Cor. 9:1) ? “And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time” (1 Cor. 15:7). When it is recognized that the Holy Spirit has given us the Scriptures, this will lead us to the Scriptures for guidance rather than to dreams and impressions. Dreams or impressions, while not to be ignored, must be in con formity to all truth through the written word—“If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isa. 8:20). The richest of divine revelation is to be found in the Scriptures that have been provided us. The Spirit who guided in revealing this 8 Systematic Theology truth now guides us into all truth by taking the things of Christ, found in the Scriptures, and revealing them unto us. In the center of this guidance we find Jesus. All dreams, all visions, all spiritual utterances thought to be from God should be in harmony with the sacred Scrip tures. CHRIST’S PRE-AUTHENTICATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT In keeping with what has been said we quote from notes on John 16:12 as found in the Scofield Bible: (1) He expressly declared that He would leave “many things” unrevealed” (v. 12). (2) He promised that this revelation should be completed (“all things”) after the Spirit should come, and that such additional revelation should include new prophecies (v. 13). (3) He chose certain persons to receive such additional revelations, and to be His witnesses to them (Matt. 28:19; John 15:27; 16:13; Acts 1:8; 9:15-17). (4) He gave to their words when speaking for Him in the Spirit precisely the same authority as His own (Matt. 10:14, 15; Luke 10:16: John 13:20; 17:20). C chapter ZJwo PERSONALITY AND TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PERSONALITY One of the first requirements for those who would worship God in the Spirit is that they determine whether the Holy Spirit is an influence from God or whether He is a Divine Person who comes into our hearts to direct our worship. Scripture Proof of Personality As we study concerning the Holy Spirit we find the personal pronoun continually used concerning Him. “He shall testify of me” (John 15:26). “I will send Him unto you” (John 16:7). “He will reprove the world of sin” (v. 8). “He will guide you into all truth” (v. 13). “He shall glorify me” (v. 14). Mind, which includes thought, feeling, and purpose is attributed to the Holy Spirit. “And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit” (Romans 8:27). As man is possessed of natural knowledge, the Spirit possesses spiritual knowledge—“For what man knoweth the things of man, save the spirit of man that is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God” (1 Cor. 2:11). (1) The Spirit searcheth the deep things of God—“For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God” (1 Cor. 2:10). 9
