Sympetrum xiaoi spec. nov.,
a new dragonfly from Shanxi, China
(Anisoptera: Libellulidae)

The new sp. (holotype 6: China, Shanxi,Yang cheng: Mang R„ 2-VIII-1994;
depositedat DeptLife Sci., Shanxi Univ.,China) is described, illustrated and
comparedwith S. infuscatum (Sel.). It differs from the latter as follows: (1)
pterothorax: 2nd lateral stripeincompleteabove,- (2) abd, segments 6-8: lateral
stripes complete,- (3)penis;3rd segmentlongerand its distal comutus baculiform.
2 6 paratypesare from the XingR., Shanxi. The 2 is unknown.

Sci.).
Etymology.- The new speciesis dedicated toourteacher. Professor Dr Cai-yu Xiao.
MALE. - Head.-Labium yellow, middlelobe brown-blackish. Labrumpale
yellow,anteriormargined with black.Face, fronsand vertex pale yellow, ablack
narrow linethrough theocellidecurrentatsidesalong margins oftheeyes. Occiput
yellow-brownish. Rearofeyes black withthreespotsandaline ina verticalrow.
Prothorax.- Blackabove,withanteriorlobepale yellow,middleofmid-lobe
markedwith aV-likepale lineandposterior lobedarkyellowish.
Pterothorax.—Yellow withblack stripes as inFigure 1.Mid-dorsalstripe
broadly confluentwithcollarstripe, humeralstripebroader,2nd lateralstripe nar-
rowly blackand incomplete above, 3rd stripe broader, and all stripes confluent
beneathon the leg bases: Wings hyaline, with extreme bases tinged with amber-
-yellow andmarkedwith abrown cross bandcovering theapices to theproximal

end ofstigma. Legs blackbut innersides ofanteriorpairoffemorapale yellow.
Abdomen.- Reddish-ochreous,withblack stripes,colourpatternasinFigure
2.Segments 1-3yellow, inthe1stand2ndmarkedwithblack stripes.4th segment,
ventro-laterally, with asmall black apical spot, which is confluentwith a black
ventralstripe. 5th-9thsegmentsmarkedsimilarly,with theareas ofblack increas-
ing by degrees ineachsuccessive segment.Black markingscontinueintosegment
10, somewhatreduced in extent. Beneathblackish. Appendages pale, tips black,
thesuperior slightly longer than theinferior.
Genitalia.-Black, the penis has its specific characteristics on the 3rd
segment, itsdistalcornutus likeapairofrods(baculiform) andarmedwithahook
on itstip,as in Figures 3-5.
Measurements (in mm). - Abdomen (incl. app.)24-28; - hind wing29-34.
FEMALE unknown.
AFFINITIES.- The newspecies resembles S. infuscatum (Sel.) in its colourand
brown wingapexes. However, itdiffersobviously fromthelatteras follows;
