In this highly multidisciplinary research domain, distributed systems are studied that can easily and autonomously sense the physio- logical and behavioral information of users over time, and can use this information in its relationship with users, while the user interacts with the system, understanding it regardless of his/her ability to explicitly refine his/her request. The International Workshop on Symbiotic Interaction is the primary venue for presenting scientific work dealing with the symbiotic relationships between humans and computers and for discussing the nature and implications of such relationships. At this small yet gritty workshop, researchers from academia and industry from all over the world discuss the latest theories, research findings, issues, applications, and artifacts related to this kind of interaction, acknowledged as qualitatively different from other kinds of human interdependency with technologies considered in the past. Previous editions of the workshop were held in Padua (twice), London, Helsinki, and Berlin. A description of the workshop series and its focus can be found at www.symbiotic-interaction.org. SYMBIOTIC2017wasorganizedbyEindhovenUniversityofTechnologyandwas held in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) during December 18–19. At least two reviewers from a scientific committee of 24 experts in the different areas covered by this workshop evaluated each submission. Of the 23 submitted papers, ten were accepted, yielding an acceptance rate of 43.8%. Among these, the work presented by Giulia Cartocci et al., “Alpha and Theta EEG Variations as Indices of Listening Effort to Be Implemented in Neurofeedback Among Cochlear Implant Users,” won the Best Paper award. The program included three keynotes by Elisabeth André, Anne-Marie Brouwer, and Pim Haselager. Thisvolumecontainstheacceptedshortandlongpaperspresentedduringthemain track of the conference. In addition, the volume includes the abstracts of the keynote speeches and a report of the specialpanel on ethics that has become a tradition in this workshop and that this year was devoted to discussing “Transparency as an Ethical Safeguard.” This conference was only a success thanks to the great efforts of many people. We thank our sponsors for their involvement and participation in the meeting: BrainProducts, Center for Humans and Technology (TU/e), TMSi, and Noldus Infor- mation Technology. We would like to thank all authors for submitting their high-quality work, thereviewersfor theirconstructive andextensivefeedback, and all VI Preface scientific and organizational chairs who worked hard to allow this conference to be such an important addition to scientific knowledge and the research and practice communities studying symbiotic interaction.
