May 31-June 4, 2000 SYLLABUS 32nd Annual Meeting ' Queen Elizabeth Hotel Montreal, QC, Canada j Photos courtesy of Tourisme Montréal, Maestro Plus, and the Queen E/jza/1h Hotel ...-. Distinguished Service Award 2000 At this year's meeting, the first SOAP Distinguished Service Award will be bestowei It is fitting that the initial recipient of this honor will be a person whose name has been so closely identified with obstetric anesthesia for so manyyears, Gertie F. Marx, MD. Genie Marx has spent more than fifty years practidng teaching, and loving obstetric anesthesiology. She arrived in New York City in 1937 as a young immigrant from a Europe about to be torn apart again by a disastrous war. She had obtained her fmedical degree from the University of Bern, Switzerland, after completing the training begun at the University of Frankfurt, Germany. Dr. Marx developed an interest in anesthesiology during her internship at the Beth Israel Hospital and following her residency she joined the staff as an attending anesthesiologist. In 1966, Dr. Marx moved to the Bronx as the first faculty member of the fledgling Department of Anesthesiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Thereafter began one of the most productive careers in anesthesiology. During her academic lifetime, Dr. Marx published a medical text, edited three more, wrote 16 book chapters, and published more than one hundred twenty scientific papers. The major portion of this work was in obstetric anesthesia. Equally as important, she trained generations of residents and fellows in obstetric anesthesia so that her influence on the humane care of the pregnant woman and her baby spread to all corners of the United States and the world. Dr. Marx has spearheaded many of the advances in our understanding of obstetric anesthesia principles. Identification of methods of preventing block-induced hypotension, elucidation of dangers associated with aortocaval compression, and demonstration of the safety of spinal anesthesia incases of fetal distress are just afew of her contributions to maternal and fetal well-being. Dr. Marx has always been a prominent figure at SOAP meetings and in front of the floor microphones despite her diminutive stature. Her ability to simplify concepts and cut to the chase has helped many investigators hone their magnum opus. As recognition of the enjoyment Genie finds in resident t - thing and research, SOAP some years ago created the Genie Marx Resident Research Award, a prominent feature of the annual meeting. Genie F. Marx, MD has received many honorsover the years. She has received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Gold Medal of the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association, the Lofgren Award, and has been presented to the Queen. SOAP is honored by Genie F. Marx's acceptance of its initial Distinguished Service Award. At the age of eighty-eight, Dr. Marx necessarily limits her travel but is looking forward to joining other SOAPers in Montréal. Gerard. M. Bassell, MD Scientific Program Committee Alan C.
