Description:

Zadie Smith’s dazzlingly energetic and deeply human story about friendship, music and true identity, how they shape us and how we can survive them.

Two brown girls dream of being dancers — but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, about what constitutes a tribe, or what makes a person truly free. It's a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either. Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots, about how we are shaped by these things and how we can survive them.

"Swing Time is Zadie Smith’s fifth novel and for my money her finest ... For its plot alone, Swing Time makes for truly marvellous reading ... Cinematic as it is, the novel does what only literature can and what only great literature will: forces us to assess the very vocabulary with which we speak of human experience ... Swing Time has brilliant things to say about race, class, and gender, but its most poignant comment is perhaps this. Given who we are, who we are told that we are not, and who we imagine we might become, how do we find our way home?"  -  Taiye Selasi, The Guardian

Zadie Smith is a multi-award-winning author, who made a huge impact with her first novel, White Teeth which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Guardian First Book Award. It was followed by The Autograph Man, On Beauty, NW and Swing Time, a novella, The Embassy of Cambodia, and a collection of essays, Changing My Mind. On Beauty was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize and won the Orange Prize for Fiction, and NW was shortlisted for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.
