From the Alumnae Association President Dear Sweet Briar Alumna, Thank you for purchasing the Sweet Briar College Alumnae Directory. We hope that you will find it helpful in keeping in touch with classmates and friends. At the back of the book is a new listing denoting alumnae by occupational classifications. This should make it easier for you to be in touch with other Sweet Briar alumnae who are engaged in your sphere of interest. Being involved as an active alumna is an excellent way to be of service to the College. Our Association aids in the recruitment of qualified students, raises scholarship monies, supports the Annual Fund and underwrites numerous cultural events on campus, such as Winter Forums. Reunions, club events and travel programs provide not only a time to socialize but frequently also are an opportunity to learn about an academic area in depth through a lecture, exhibit or special presentation. Please do come back to "The Patch" and stop in at our new home at Boxwood. The wonderful staff is ready to welcome you and provide information and assistance. Plan to tour our fascinating museum with memorabilia of Daisy, the Fletchers and many decades of Sweet Briar memories. And as you revisit favorite nooks and crannies of our beautiful campus and the elegant buildings designed by Ralph Adams Cram, do take pride in the fact that Sweet Briar has recently been named a National Historic District. With best wishes to you all, Nancy Hudler Keuffel'62 President, Alumnae Association VI { Sweet Briar College Academic Program One of the country's most distinguished small, independent women's colleges, Sweet Briar offers the A.B. degree in 40 major fields and the B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, or Psychology. In addition, the College offers pre-professional certification programs in Business Management, Arts Management, Public Administration and teacher certification. There is also the option for self-designed majors. A full-fledged honors degree program includes all classes. Special Studies programs in Asian studies, International Studies, Latin American Studies, and Women and Gender Studies are also available, and a minor is offered in every department that has a major and in Women and Gender Studies. Sweet Briar supports its academic program with computer-related instruction. Computers are used across the curriculum, and there are well-equipped computer labs, with facilities constantly expanding. Special attributes of Sweet Briar: * A full-time teaching faculty of 70, 94% of whom have doctorates or the terminal degree in their fields. * A student/faculty ratio of 8:1. (Close relations with the faculty is the reason overwhelmingly cited by alumnae for their success.) * An international reputation for study-abroad programs, particularly the Sweet Briar Junior year in France, which since 1948 has attracted nearly 5000 students from 257 American colleges and universities. * Library resources of over 230,000 voliimes, 350,000 microforms, 5,363 audio-visual materials and 1,133 current periodicals; computer linkage with the libraries of Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg College, and the Lynchburg Public Library; full Internet access; special libraries for art, music, education and the sciences. * A modern art gallery and art history library, in addition to well-equipped studios in art, music, theatre and dance. * The Guion Science Center with up-to-date labs and equipment. The Biology lab includes an electron microscope with a digital imaging system, unusual for a small college. * A national student body. About 80% are from out of state (more than 40 states are represented) and there are also about 30 students from abroad. * A generous financial aid policy, strongly supported by alumnae, ensures that the needs of all qualified students are met. * Career counseling services for both students and alumnae. * Sweet Briar's 3,300-acre campus, one of the most beautiful in the country. The original buildings, designed by Ralph Adams Cram, are known as the most perfect example of the collegiate Georgian style, and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. *Outstanding athletic facilities, including the Rogers Riding Center, one of the best-designed collegiate riding facilities in the country. * An endowment of $59,600,000. viii
