Printedonacid-freepaper SpringerInternationalPublishingAGSwitzerlandispartofSpringerScience+BusinessMedia (www.springer.com) Preface This LNCS volume contains the papers presented at the 5th Swarm, Evolutionary and Memetic Computing Conference (SEMCCO-2014) held during December 18–20, 2014, at the Institute of Technical Education and Research, Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. SEMCCO is regarded as one of the most prestigious international conference series that aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to report and review the latest progress in cutting-edge research on swarm, evolutionary, memetic computing, and other novel computing techniques such as neural and fuzzy computing, to explore new application areas, to design new bio-inspired algorithms for solving specific hard optimization problems, and finally to create awareness of these domains to a wider audience of practitioners. SEMCCO-2014received250papersubmissionsfrom18countriesacrosstheglobe. After a rigorous peer-review process involving 800 reviews, 96 full-length articles were accepted for oral presentation at the conference. This corresponds to an accep- tance rate of 38.4 % and is intended for maintaining the high standards of the con- ference proceedings. The papers includedinthis LNCS volume cover awide range of topicsinswarm, evolutionary, memetic, andotherintelligentcomputingalgorithmsand theirreal-worldapplicationsinproblemsselectedfromdiversedomainsofscienceand engineering. Theconferencefeaturedfourdistinguished keynote speakers:Prof. KalyanmoyDeb, MichiganStateUniversity,USA;Prof.BidyutBaranChaudhuri,IndianStatisticalInsti- tute,Kolkata,India;Prof.YaochuJin,UniversityofSurrey,UK;andDr.P.N.Suganthan, NTU,Singapore. We take this opportunity to thank the authors of all submitted papers for their hard work, adherencetothedeadlines, andpatiencewiththereviewprocess.Thequalityof a reviewed volume depends mainly on the expertise and dedication of the reviewers. We are indebted to the Program Committee/Technical Committee members, who not only produced excellent reviews but also did these in the short time frames that they were given. We would also like to thank our sponsors for providing all the logistic support and financial assistance. First, we are indebted to ITER Management and Administrations (faculty colleagues and administrative personnel of the School of Computer Science, SchoolofElectronicsEngineering, andSchoolofElectricalEngineering)forsupporting our cause and encouraging us to organize the conference at ITER, SOA University, Bhubaneswar,Odisha, forthesecond time.Inparticular, wewouldliketoexpressour heartfelt thanks to Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, President, Siksha O Anusandhan Trustforprovidinguswiththenecessaryfinancialsupportandinfrastructuralassistance to hold the conference. Our sincere thanks are due to Prof. R.P. Mohanty, Vice Chancellor, SOA University, Prof. P.K. Sahoo, Dean, ITER, Prof. M.K. Mallick, Director Administration, Prof. P.K.
