This grouping of instruments is called a string quarteL I In the days before radio and television, people made their own entertl\inment at home. Learning to play an instrument was as much a part of education qr as. math social studies. Members of a particular family would gather in the "parlor" or "drawing room" after the evening meal and make music. Guests to the home would be invited to join in. I - Since mu1sic played by small groups ofp eople was origil)ally performed in rooms (chambers) in people's houses, this music became known as Chamber Music. U111ike symphonic music or opera, chamber music requires very little space and can be played just about anywhere. [n a chamber group-such as a string quartet-there is only one player for each part in the music (not like an orchestra where as many as 10 people play eacq part). WJ)en you play in a chamber group, you are a soloist; your part is n~ssary to the music whether you have an "easy" part -or !l more difficult one. · u~ually Chambe)groups do not need conductors. They often work with a coach who listens to them play and offers suggestions about tempos, dynamics, expression and bowings. But really it is the players themselves who "conduct" their performances. Whoever starts playing first usually "leads" the . music-u~ing body movements and facial gestures. Ife veryone starts playing at the same time, one of the players will act as leader-helping keep J the grou~ together. In a string quartet, this person may be the first violinist - but it could be any of the group. i ! Some mu~icians like playing in chamber groups better than any other type of music-making. They like the idea ofp laying as soloists while also making music in #le company of friends and musical colleagues. I Haydn, tv1ozart, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms are just a few of the great composers who wrote music specifically for such groups as string quartets. These composition.s, in fact, while really being "symphonies" or "sonatas" for four instruments, became known as "String Quartets". So .. a "string ~uartel" can be eithe~ a group of musicians - or a piece of music. · . . , Most chainber groups are known by names which they choose. Some f~ous string quartets ~ho play a!ld make recordings today are The Julliard ~ String Qu;artet, The Tokyo String Quartet and The Kronos String Quartet. · · I i ,.... ,- .I .
