He is a former Deputy Director of the Forestry Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), and a former Director of the International Farm Forestry Training Institute of CAF. He is also a former Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the CAF, Honourable Chairman of the Academic Association of Forest Ecology, Chinese Society of Forestry, former Deputy Director General of INBAR (the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, known since May 2017 as the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization) and an INBAR Dis- tinguished Fellow. As a Senior Researcher who has conducted forestry science over more than 50 years, Prof. Zhu Zhaohua has especially important achievements in research on the rehabilitation of natural second- ary forests, the rehabilitation of degraded lands, the optimization of agroforestry models, Paulownia cultivation technology and genetic improvement, integrated mountain sustainable development, and key issues affecting the sustainable developments of non-timber forestry products and bamboo sectors. He has had many national and international awards, of which some of the most outstand- ing are: designation by the China State Council in 1991 as ‘The Special Contribution Scientist of State’; receipt of the first award of the title of ‘Man of the Trees’ by the International Richard St. Barbe Baker Foundation (formerly ‘the Men of the Trees’, now the International Tree Foundation) for contributions to developing rural forestry in China (1985); designation by the then Prime Minis- ter of Canada – Jean Chrétien – on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the International Devel- opment Research Centre (IDRC) as a world outstanding scientist who has contributed to leading international cooperation projects (1995); the titles of All Life Research Professor of Indian Acad- emy of Forestry (1995) and Honorable Member of the American Society of Foresters (2002); and the bestowing of the ‘World Bamboo Pioneer Award’ by World Bamboo Organization at the 10th World Bamboo Congress in South Korea (2015). From 1987 to 1998, Prof. Zhu Zhaohua organized eight international training workshops on agroforestry and multipurpose tree species (1990–1997) and organized 4 training courses on Forest Ecology for Cottbus University of Germany. From 1999 to 2015, with the sponsorship of The China Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), he conducted 19 training workshops on bamboo and rattan development, and at the request of various international organizations and countries, he pro- vided 25 training courses and study tours on bamboo and rattan development. The total number of participants in the above training activities amounted to over 1400 professionals from 64 countries. During the past 38 years, he has also been invited to visit 26 countries worldwide to provide consult- ancy services on agroforestry, bamboo and rattan development. She has 19 years of experience working in international development and capacity building for developing countries in INBAR, and has accumulated a certain amount of knowledge and experi- ence in non-timber forest product development and rural sustainable development, as well as in related policy making and strategy identification. She has taken on major responsibilities in the or- ganization of more than 30 international seminars and training workshops, in which total number of international participants exceeded 1000.
