MANJAIAH Index 309 Preface Surface engineering has been regarded as one of the most important approaches to the reduction of friction and wear. The product requires sur- face engineering for excellent mechanical, chemical, and tribological prop- erties and higher performance. With advancements in surface engineering processes, the product performance and efficiency have increased and are ever growing. From traditional to advance engineering, the processes have evolved immensely over time. One domain of advanced surface engineering processes is the involvement of biomaterials, smart materials, and hybrid materials in the processes. This book details out a wide range of surface engineering technologies along with applications in a comprehensive manner. It elaborates on various technologies invented and employed for surface engineering of products with different materials and modifications. The primary aim of this book is to give the readers a well-informed layout of the surface engineering tech- nology that ranges from nanomaterials to hybrid and smart materials, Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, and technologies involved in the indus- try-specific applications each possesses. It also talks about various aspects of surface engineering that are different from process-specific details. Some of these aspects are computational and simulation analysis, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, design modification, process control, and vii viii Preface their characteristics for engineering compatibility. The authors have very distinctively brought together current research archives from various sources and have come up with a platform that has surface engineering technology together with latest research technologies used in these processes for the readers to benefit from. The readers perceive this platform in a manner which makes it easy and better for them to understand and gain from. This easy manner of understanding provides the readers with an opportunity to have a deep understanding of the methods, materials, applications, and opti- mization of surface engineering technology. The book has a wide scope of reaching out to a diverse audience including but not limited to production or manufacturing engineers, researchers, and academicians. The audience will be guided by this book to be able to make appropriate process selections for different types of materials used for sur- face engineering. The researcher scope of this book is that it will help the research fraternity in narrowing down steps for further research in similar domain. The book very distinctively provides scope of further enhancements to the surface engineering technology by providing explanations on latest advancements in the manufacturing processes. With industries advancing in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, these processes are needed to be revamped with new materials and techniques to keep their pace with industrial pro- duction standards. A section of the book is dedicated to the application and optimization of surface engineering techniques. Editors R. S.
