Gilliland .......................................... supernatural-forces_spiritual_warfare_text.indd 8 8/17/12 2:19 PM preFace t he decade of the 1990s was a remarkable season for the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit began speaking, more strongly than previously, about supernatural dimensions of the gospel. Many of us experienced quantum leaps in our understanding and application of the principles of power evangelism and spiritual war- fare. Then, as we moved forward into the 2000s, a number of us began hearing and teaching some of the newer things that the Holy Spirit was revealing. Unfortunately, we found ourselves operat- ing on a false premise. We had naively assumed that we no longer needed to teach about power evangelism and spiritual warfare because the Church had learned all of this in the 1990s. Eventually we realized that this was wrong because (1) there were many in the Church who had not been touched by this message, (2) some who were touched forgot what they had learned and stopped practicing it, and (3) large numbers of new people who knew nothing about these subjects had been coming into the Church. One of the more notable events toward the beginning of the ’90s was a convocation of distinguished leaders of the evangelical aca- demic community with the purpose of discussing issues related to | 9 | supernatural-forces_spiritual_warfare_text.indd 9 8/17/12 2:19 PM 10 | Supernatural ForceS Spiritual WarFare in power evangelism and spiritual warfare. Keep in mind that these subjects had not ordinarily been included in the curricula of our traditional seminaries and Bible schools. But, as you will see, no fewer than 40 scholars found time to participate in the Academic Symposium on Power Evangelism held at Fuller Seminary in 1988. This fascinating book contains the presentations and responses of these scholars. Destiny Image Publishers has joined us in going back to the basics, and they agreed to re-release Supernatural Forces in Spiritual Warfare: Wrestling with Dark Angels, originally published by Regal Books as Wrestling with Dark Angels. While I convened the Sympo- sium and gathered the papers, my friend, Douglas Pennoyer, now dean of the Cook School of Intercultural Studies at Biola Univer- sity, did the editorial work for the book. In this new release we have made no attempt to update the material. It is a historical document that unveils stimulating insights and avenues for practical applica- tion that are as useful today as they were back then. Reading this is an uplifting experience from beginning to end. supernatural-forces_spiritual_warfare_text.indd 10 8/17/12 2:19 PM introduction t he 1980s to the 1990s was an awesome period of time for the Christian community. Skilled analysts and prophets alike are affirming that the decade of the ’90s shaped up as an arena for the greatest outpouring of spiritual power in at least living memory if not in all of Christian history. The fruition of the 90-year-old Pen- tecostal movement, now joined by the charismatic movement and the Third Wave, was one of the chief contributing factors. These movements combined with new and powerful emphases on church growth, compassion for the poor and oppressed, prayer, prophecy, and other aspects of the supernatural. A striking feature of this buildup that resulted in a new break- through around the turn of the century was a new openness to the miraculous works of the Holy Spirit across the lines of historic Chris- tian traditions. For years many evangelicals shunned the reported manifestations of signs and wonders, healings, demonic deliver- ances, and miracles in the Pentecostal and charismatic movements. A few still rather staunchly adhere to their traditional anti-Pente- costal positions, but their ranks are becoming notably thin. | 11 | supernatural-forces_spiritual_warfare_text.indd 11 8/17/12 2:19 PM
