After all, what’s the point of just surviving, and missing out on the things in life which make for a happy and pleasurable enhanced lifestyle. Recent dietary research has uncovered different nutrient-dense foods that time and again promote good overall health. Coined “superfoods,” they tend to have fewer calories, higher levels of vitamins and minerals, and many disease-fighting antioxidants. Superfoods can all help stop and even reverse diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and some forms of cancer. And where one might have an effect on a certain part of the body, it can also affect the health of other body functions and performance, since the whole body is connected. Including superfoods foods as part of a balanced, solid diet, weight loss gimmicks and other fly-by-night programs can become a thing of the past in your life. Conversely, the ill-effects of an unbalanced diet are several and varied. Low energy levels, mood swings, tired all the time, weight change, uncomfortable with body are just a few signs that your diet is unbalanced. An unbalanced diet can cause problems with maintenance of body tissues, growth and development, brain and nervous system function, as well as problems with bone and muscle systems. Symptoms of malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion that can trigger a variety of health concerns including anaemia. 6 If you think you cannot be malnourished in this modern era, think again, unless you are eating fresh, organic fruit and vegetables it is possible, even probable, that you are missing some important nutrients. Many modern diets based on processed, pre-packaged convenience foods are sorely lacking in many vitamins and minerals, (not to mention the cumulative effects of the additives, preservatives, colouring and flavouring they contain), which can affect our mental capacities as well, and cause irritability, confusion, and the feeling of ‘being in a fog’ all the time. Superfoods can be the basis of a sound, healthy, nutritious solution to helping relieve many of these ailments and more. There is no doubt that there is body/mind connection. Realizing that an unhealthy body will result in an unhealthy spirit only makes sense. When we nourish our body with these superfoods and complement them with other nutrient-dense and healthy fresh foods, our spirit will be revitalized and healthier as a direct result. 7 WWhhaatt aarree SSuuppeerrffooooddss?? My personal definition is as follows:- ““NNaattuurraall,, nnuuttrriieenntt ddeennssee,, bbiioo--aavvaaiillaabbllee ffooooddss,, ppaarrttiiccuullaarrllyy tthhoossee wwhhiicchh pprroovviiddee ssuuppeerriioorr nnuuttrriittiioonn wwiitthh rreellaattiivveellyy llooww ccaalloorriieess““ While I would love to add organic and unprocessed to my definition, I feel this is just too restrictive and would unnecessarily eliminate many superfoods which have substantial benefits. There are Superfoods which are unobtainable in your local market and require processing, of some type, at the source to facilitate distribution. As an example, acai berries and maqui berries are both highly sought after, but highly perishable superfoods (both originate in remote areas) which cannot be shipped without processing. Likewise, with Green Tea, no one has a tea plantation on their doorstep, well, very few of us anyway! So, I’m not eliminating these valuable Superfoods. In fact some the goodness in some foods is inaccessible without processing, stabilized rice bran for example! Some are everyday foods you will know well. Others may be new to you and the properties of many of them may surprise you. 8 OOrrggaanniicc FFooooddss Still wondering why you should boost your nutrition? Our bodies have a lot to overcome each day. We are constantly bombarded with chemicals. Over the past century the quantity of synthetic chemicals manufactured has escalated dramatically. Not only do these chemicals burden your body with a toxic load there are many which have been scientifically proven to be carcinogenic. So reducing toxins, as much as possible, in your environment, food and water is an important part of your longevity strategy. This alone is a very good reason to eat as many organic foods are you can reasonably afford. Of course another reason is increased nutritional value. Studies have confirmed that organically grown foods have more nutritional value than non-organic grown. The good news is that many organic foods are becoming less expensive due increased demand. Most supplements are derived from synthesized chemical based ingredients. Whole foods contain natural compounds, in synergistic combinations which provide your body with nutrition as nature intended. Synthetic or man-made, may contains chemicals, binders or fillers. They have limited nutrient content as it is impossible to cram high concentration and big amount of nutrients in one formula. Lacking the synergy of nature, they do not provide a balanced way of obtaining nutrition. They are difficult to digest, absorb and be utilized by the body as they are not natural. 10
