Introduction Theinsect faunaofChinaiscategorizedinthePalearcticandOrientalbiogeo- graphicalregionsandisoneoftherichestinspeciesdiversityinAsia.Thecerambycid faunaofChinawasoncerevisedbyGREss1TT(1951). He listed1,895 taxaincluding speciesandsubspecies. Recently in2002, HuApublisheda“List ofChinese Insects, Vol. II” inwhichherecordedthetaxaknownupto t990. Accordingtothislist, the number of speciesand subspecies of theCerambycidae (including Disteniidae) in- creasedto2,643inthese40years. 0ntheotherhand,JIANGandCHEN(2001)men- tioned in their revisionalstudyoftheChineseLepturinaeas follows: “一dueto the 452 Nobuo0l.lBAYAsHI,TatsuyaNIISAT0andWANGWen-kai greatchangeofenvironmentalconditions,suchastherapiddevelopmentofurbaniza- tioncausedthedisappearanceof forestsandlossofhabitatandabilityofexistenceof these beetles- these factorsresultedthat theactual number ofthespeciesshouldbe greatlyreduced一”.However,theenvironmentalpolicyofChinanowbecomesbetter and therearemanynaturereservesinspiteof remarkableeconomicdevelopment. Theseprotectedareas inChinastill retainunspoilednaturalenvironmentandareex- pectednewscientificdiscoveries. In theautumn of 2003, oneof theauthors,WANG invited OHBAYASH1 forguest professorofYangtzeUniversity,andacooperativestudyofinsectdiversityinthewest- erndistrictsofHubeiProvincewasstarted.Inthespringof2004,wevisitedtheHouhe NationalNatureReserveofWufengTujiazuZizhixianandwereabletocollectmany interestinginsectsdespiteofquitebadweathercondition. Aboveall,thecerambycid speciesbelongingtothegenusNotorhabdiumandCalym()x!swereunexpectedexciting discoveries. This isthe rstpartofourstudyofcerambycidbeetlescollectedbythis investigation. Theabbreviations used for thedepositories of typespecimensareas follows: EUEL-Enlomo1ogica1Laboratory,EhimeUniversity, YUAC-AgricultureCollege, YangtzeUniversity,TN-T.NllsAToprivatecollection. Lepturinae Xylosteini Note,habdiumbang?/tutN.01-lBAYASHIetWANG,sp nov. (Figs.l,7) Female. Length9.5mm fromthe tipsofmandibles toelytra1apices,width 1.5mmacrosshumeralangles. Bodyextremelyslenderwithspindlyappendages,almostparallel-sided.Headand pronotumdarkreddishbrown;elytrareddishbrown;antennae,maxillarypalpiandlegs blackexcept fortibiaeandtarsiwhicharemoreor lessreddish;ventralsurfaceblack buttheapicalhalfofprosternumisreddishbrown.Headandpronotumsparselypro- videdwiththinrecumbentbrownpubescence;samepubescenceonscutellummoreor lessdenserthanthatofpronotum;thehairsarisingfromelytra1punctureslightbrown, thin,shortandsubrecumbent;elytra1apicesdensely fringedwithgoldenhairs;ventral surfacerather closelycoveredwiththinsubrecumbentbrownpubescenceexcept for headandapicalhalfofprosternumwhicharenaked. Head(Fig.1-a)moderateinlength,obliquelyproducedanteria almost of the samewidthaspronotumacrosslateral tubercles,closelypuncturedthroughout;gena almostaslongaslongaxisofeye;interoculardistance2.2timesaslargeasthedis- tancebetweenantennal cavities; temperadistinct,subparalle1behindeyesand then CcrambycidaeofHubei,I 453 stronglyconstricted;vertextransverselyconvexaboveanddeclinedtowardsneck;eyes rathersmall,moderatelycoarsely faceted,almostentireovalwithslightemargination at upperanterior margins; distal segment ofmaxillary palpusslightly dilated apicad andobliquelytruncateat theapex(Fig. 1-d). Antennafiliform,slightly longer than body length;scapeshorter than3rdandlongerthan4th;4thhalfaslongas5th; from 5thtothelastsegmentgraduallydecreasinginlength;relativelengthofeachantennal segmentasfollows:-4.0:1.0:4.7:3.6:7.2:7.7:7.4:6.6:5.7:5.3:5.1. Pronotum (Fig. 1-a)elongate,1.52 timesas longas basalwidth; discclosely puncture providedwithasmoothmedianlinefromtheapextobasal thirdandapair of roundswellingsatapical third;anteriormarginslightly roundedanteriad; lateral sidesonceexpandedlateradjustbehindapicalmargin,thenwidelyconstrictedand fol- lowingtodistinctconicaltuberclesatbasalthird;hindangleshardlyproducedlaterad; basealmoststraight;apicalandbasalmarginsnarrowlybordered. Presternal process narrow and divergent distally with emarginated apex; mesosterna1processaswideasmetasterna1processandreceiving theroundapex of metasterna1process. Legs long and slender, last tarsal segments simple and not swollen; relativelengthofhind femur, tibiaandtarsus11:10:6.3; firstsegment of hindtarsus3.6timesas longassecondand14timesas longastheremainingseg- mentscombined(Fig.1-g). Abdomencylindrical,minutely rugoselysculptured;seventhtergitevisible from above. Holotype. ,Houhe,WufengTujiazuZizhixian,HubeiProv.,China,alt.1,100 m,30-IV-2004,N. 0HBAYAsHIleg.(YUAC). Diagnostic ,7otes. This is a second species of the genus Notorhabdium N. OHBAYAsHl etSHIMoMURA, 1986.Generalcharacteristicsofthisnewspeciesarevery closetothoseofNotorhabdiumimmaculatumrecorded fromtheMalayPeninsula,but itcanbeeasilydistinguished fromthelatterbysmallbodylength,differentcoloration, smalleyes,andsoon.Thedifferencesofrelativelengthofthe forthantennalsegment whichisshorter thanscape,simplestructureofapicalsegmentoftarsus(Figs.1-e, f, g),cylindricalandexposedabdomen,widthofmesosternalprocesswhichisaswideas metasternal process(Fig. 1-b)seemtosuggest differentiation fromthegenus No- torhabdium,butthismustbere-examinedwhenthemalespecimenbecomesavailable. Etymology. ThisnewspeciesisdedicatedtoMr.WANGBang-zhu,vice-gover- norofWufengTujiazuZizhixian,whokindlysupportedoursurvay. Rhagiini Encyc1opshubeiensisN.OHBAYAsH、etWANG,sp nov. (Figs3,8) Male. Length6.7-8.9mm fromthetipsofmandiblestoelytra1apices,width 1.3-1.7mmacrosshumeralangles. Bodyslender,almostparallel-sided. Headandpronotumblack;elytrametallic green. Antennareddishbrownandapicalpart ofeachsegmentbecomingdarker; api- calmarginofclypeusreddishbrown;maxillarypalpiandlegsyellowishbrownexcept forapicalhalfofdistalsegmentofmaxillarypalpus,apico-dorsa1areaof fore femur, apical fourthofmidandhind femur,basalhalfof foretibia,basal two-thirdsofmid andhind tibiaewhichareblack; each tarsal segment of fore legs infuscated apicad, middleandhindtarsibrownexcept for thebaseofsecondsegmentofmiddletarsus CerambycidacofHubei,I 455 whichisyellowish;ventralsurfaceblackbutthecolorofabdominalsternitesvariesac- cordingtoindividualsasfollows:- usuallyblackexcept forthe fthsternitewhichisat leastpartlyyellowishbrown,andfourthandfifthsternitesofaspecimenareyellowish brown,butthesternitesareentirelyblackinonemale. Headprovidedwithrecumbentpaleyellowishhairsintermixedwithlongerect hairsonfronsandgenae.Headwithvertexandpronotumratherdenselycoveredwith recumbentlonggoldenhairsandsparselyintermixedwithlongerectgoldenhairs.Ely- tramoderatelyintermixedwithlongerectandshortsuberectpaleyellowhairs.Ventral surfaceandlegsmoderatelyprovidedwithlongsuberectandrecumbentpaleyellow hairs. Headshorterandwiderthanpronotumacrosslateraltubercles,narrowerthaneIy- traIbase,closelypuncturedthroughout; fronsalmostvertical withobliquelydirected clypeus,genashort,abouthalfaslongaseyediameter;temperadistinct,slightlycon- vergentposteria thenstronglyconstricted;vertex attened;eyeslarge,almostcircular withslightemarginationatuppermargins,anddistinctlyprominentlaterad;distalseg- mentofmaxillarypalpuswidelydilatedapicadandobliquelytruncateattheapex.An- tennafiliform,slightlylonger thanbodylength; relativelengthofeachantennalseg_ montas follows:-4.2:1.0:6.8:5.5:8.5:7.8:7.3:6.0:5.2:4.5:5.3. Pronotum longer than basal width, 1.2-1.3 timesas long as basal width, and slightly longerthanwidthacrosslateral tuberclesinbothsexes; discminutelyand closelypunctured; anteriormarginslightly roundedanteriad; lateralsidesprovided with conical tubercles and constricted before and after the tubercles; hind angles roundedandnotproducedlaterad;basebisinuate;apicalandbasalmarginnarrowly bordered. Scutellumelongatetongue-shapedwithroundapex;disc rugu1ose;stridulatory filesnarrow,entireandnotdivided. Elytraelongate,almostparallel-sidedbutslightlynarrowedmediallyandwidened againtojustbeforetheapex,3.7-3.8timesaslongaswidthacrosshumeri,outerangle of apicesgently rounded, inneranglesangulated; discdenselyprovidedwith large puncturesthroughout. Legslongandslender;each femurslightlyclavate; firstsegmentofhindtarsus 2.3timesas longassecondandslightlyshorter thantheremainingsegmentscom- bined. MalegenitaliaasshowninFig 3.Tegmenshorter thanmedianlobe,withpara- mere wide and attenedwithmanylongsetaemainlyalonginnersidetoapex;ring partstraightly narrowedbasad. Medianlobegently curvedinlateral view, theapex stronglyconstrictedwithsmallprojectionindorsalview. Female.Length8.0-9.6mmfromthetipsofmandiblestoelytra1apices,width 1.5-1.8mmacrosshumeralangles. Abdominalsternitesyellowishbrownexcept forthebasalblackareaoffirstvisi- blesternite,buttwospecimenshaveentirelyblacksternites.Antennanotreachingely- tra1apices;relativelengthofeachantennalsegmentas follows:-4.2:1.0:6.2:5.5:7.8 456 Nobuo01lBA、As1-ll.TatsuyaNllsAToandW、NGWen-kai :6.7:6.0:5.0:4.5:4.0:4.5. Pronotum slightly shorter thanmale, 1.1-1.2 times as long asbasal width. Elytraentirely parallel-sided, 3.7-3.8 times as longas width acrosshumeri. Type series. Holotype: Houhe, Wufeng Tujiazu Zizhixian, Hubei Prov., , China,alt.1,100m,30-IV-2004,N. 0HBAYAsHI leg. (YUAC).Paratypes:6 2 , , samedataasfortheholotype(EUEL&YUAC);4 ,samelocality,28-IV-2004,N. OHBAYASHIleg.(EUEL). Diagnostic notes. This new species is very similar to Encyc1ops concinna HoLzscHuHrecorded fromSichuan,China,butdiffersfromitbybicoloredlegs,and muchelongatedelytra(3.7-3.8timesaslongaswidthacrosshumeri insteadof3.6 times). ItcanbedistinguishedfromEnyc1opsolivaceaBATESdistributedinJapanby the following features:bodylarger,pronotumdistinctlylongerthanwidth,lateral tu- berclesobtuse,elytrametallicgreenandhairsonthevertexandpronotumofgolden color.ItisalsorelatedtoE.vlrldipen川sMAKIHARAfromTaiwan,butthegoldenhairs onthepronotumaresparserandelytra1colordarkerthanthoseofTaiwanesespecies. Lepturini ParastrangalisltouhensisN.OHBAYAS1-lIetWANG,Sp nov (Figs2,5&9) Male. Length12.0mmfromthetipsofmandiblestoelytra1apices,15.1mmto theapexofabdominalsegment,width2.6mm(ad'osshumera1angles). Body relatively largeandelongate. Head, pronotumand ventral surface black. Antennablackandmoreorlessbecomingpalertowardsapicalsegments,eachbaseof fourthtothelastsegmentyellowish.Maxillarypalpiandlabrumyellowishbrownex- cept fortheapicalsegmentofthepalpuswhichisdarkened.Elytrayellowishbrown with longitudinal blackstripes in the following manner:- sutural marginnarrowly black;anarrowmiddlevittastarting fromashortdistance frombaseandobliquely runningtowardsapex,andanothervittastartingsomedistance fromhumeriandrun- ningbackwardsalonglateralmargin;anoutervittabroadat thebeginning,thenonce narrowedandagainbroadened frombasalthirdandconnectedwiththemiddlevittaat basal two-fifths,thennarrowlyextendingapicad;thesethreevittaeconnectedtogether neartheapex.Legswithfemorayellowishbrownexcept fordorsumofmidonesand apicalhalvesofhindoneswhichareblackish;tibiaeandtarsiblackishbrownexcept foryellowishundersideofforetibiae. Headandpronotumcoveredwithshortsuberectdarkhairsintermixedwithsparse thinlongones,andthepronotumwithbasalcornerandapicalsmallareaofmesal lon- gitudinalsmooth lineprovidedwithsilveryhairs.Elytramoderatelyprovidedwith suberectyellowishhairs throughout. Pronotum campanuliform, distinctly constricted just behind apex, longer than basalwidth,1.05timesaslongasbasalwidth;discrathermeagerlyswollen,minutely andcloselypuncturedwithmesal impunctate1ongitudinalareaextendingfrommiddle tobasal fourth;anteriorandbasalmargindistinctlymarginate;basebisinuate;hindan- gleswelldevelopedbutnotembracingelytra1humeri. Scutellumnearlytriangularwithroundedapex. Elytraelongate, withoutermargins rather strongly convergent frombasesto the middle, thenstraightlyextendingapicad, 2.9timesaslongaswidthacrosshumeri; apexobliquelytruncate;discmoderatelyprovidedwithshallowpuncturesthroughout. Legslongandslender;each femurmoderatelyclavate;hindtibiathickenedfrom apical thirdandcurvedinwards; firstsegmentofhindtarsus2.3timesaslongassec- ondandaslongastheremainingsegmentscombined. Abdomennotcylindrical; ahalfofsixthandwholeofseventhtergiteexposed fromtheelytra1apices;seventhsternitewithoutmesaldepression; apical marginof eighthtergitegentlyrounded. MalegenitaliaasshowninFig 5. Tegmenwithparamerenarrow,straightand bluntlypointedattheapiceswhichareprovidedwithmanylongsetaeoneachantero- lateralside;basal ringedpartseparatedand roundlyconnectedatbase.Medianlobe slightlynarrowed frommiddletomoderatelyconstrictedapex indorsal view, rather stronglybentatbasal thirdinlateralview;medianstrutsconnectedwitheachotherat base. St,・a,1galiachujot:TAMANUK1,1942,207,fig219(pal'11m,neeMIToNo). Notes. ThisTaiwanesespeciesismostclosely relatedwiththespecies inthe next lines. This species was first described as a member of the genus St1・anga1omorpha.Thetypespeciesofthisgenus,St1'anga1omorphatemllsSoLsKY,has distincttempera,apicalspineofhindtibiasituatedinadistinctrecessbeforeapex,and hindtarsussulcatedbelow. Thesecharacteristicsareconsideredto bethecharacteris- ticsofthisgenus,butSt1・anga1omorphalnltonoidoesnotpossessthesefeaturesandthe morphologicalcharacteristicscoincidewiththoseofthegenusParast1・angalis,e.g.,the shapeofpronotum,notsulcatetarsalsegments,theheadbeingabruptlynarrowedjust behind theeyes and without distinct tempera, metasternum ofmalewithapair of smallprojectionsandgeneralappearanceofmalegenitaliashowsthetypicalstructure ofthisgenusasshown inFig 4.For thisreason,Palasti,angalismitono1hadbetterbe transferredtothegenusPalasti・angalis. HAYAsHI (1959) oncesuggested that thespeciesStrangalia (Stranga1omopha) shaowuensisGREsslTTcouldbeconspecificwithTaiwanesespecies,St1・anga1omorpha mltonoi HAYAsHl et IGA, judging from theoriginal descriptionandafigure. In1985, however, HAYAsHl and VILしtoRs treated thisbeetleasan independentspeciesofthe genusStranga1omorphawithoutanycomment. A femalespecimen collected by our expedition is close in appearance toS. mltonoi HAYAsHl et IGA, 1951, butthesetwospecies canbedistinguished fromeach CcrambycidaeofHubei,I 459 1 t ( _ .a .a : 1 C Figs. 3-6.
