E:1ytra,Tokyo,35(1):325-334,May30,2007 StudiesontheBuprestidae(Coleoptera) ofAsia 7) ANewSpeciesoftheGenusAkiyamala fromMyanmar Takaharu HATToRI 1-35-23 Nakazawa,Asahi-ku,Yokohama,241-0814Japan and Masahiro TANAKA 3-10-7Mikatadai, Nishi-ku, Kobe,651-2277Japan Abstract Akiyamaiadescribedby Y. KUROSAWA(1988)asasubgenusof Cypriacis is redefined and upgraded to a full genus. A new buprestid species, Akiyamalasamanthaesp nov.isdescribedfromNorthMyanmar. Thisnewspeciesis characterizedbythepresenceofamediancarinaonthepronotum. CAsEY(1909)definedthesubgenusCypriacisinthegenusBuprestisbythepresence of regular costaeand theabsenceofstriaeon theelytra. Then, RICHTER (1952) upgradedCypriacistoagenusinviewoftheanteriormarginofpronotumhemmedwith agrooveinaddition totheabovementionedcharacteristics. Later, Y. KUROSAWA (1988) redefinedthegenusCypriacisbyaddingthepresenceofadistinct longitudinal mediangrooveonthepronotumasanotherpeculiarityofthegenus. Healsoestablished thesubgeneraAkiyamaiaandHima1obuprestlsinthegenusCypriacisbaseduponthe presenceof adistinct largedepression on each side of the median groove on the pronotum. The authors had an opportunity to examine (ypriacis specimens from North Myanmar. ThesespecimensgenerallyaccordwiththefeatureofthesubgenusAkiya- maia, but bearing a remarkable median carina instead of median groove on the pronotum. TheauthorsthereforeconsiderthatthegenusCypriacisshouldberedefined. After acarefulexamination, it becomesapparent that thesubgeneraAkiyamaiaand Hima1obuprestisand thenewly foundspeciesfromNorthMyanmarbear anobvious emarginationonthebasalmarginofparamereinthemalegenitalia, differingfromthe typicalspeciesofCypriacis in thePalearcticRegion. For thisreason, theauthorsare goingtoupgradeAkiyamaiatoanindependentgenus,andtoregardHima1obuprestisas asubgenusofAkiyamaia. Anewname,Akiyamatasamanthaesp nov. isgiven for the newspecies fromNorth Myanmar. 326 Takaharu HATTORIandMasahiro TANAKA Beforegoingfurther, theauthorswishtoexpresstheirsincerethankstoDr.Shuhei NOMURAoftheDepartmentofZoology,NationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo andtoDr.Shun-lobiU直NOofthesamemuseumfortheirkindnessincriticallyreading theoriginalmanuscriptandofferinginvaluablesuggestions.
