As one reads over the ac- counts ofthe proceedings against Campbell, there remains something elusive which might more charitablyaccountforthe relative rapidityofthejudgment and for the difficulty he had in getting a serious examination ofhis views of the atonement. It is as ifthere had been brewing certain tendencies around which the Church ofScotlandwas already polarized, so thatCampbell’s views were heard and read by people preoccupied with an earlierconflict, impatient to put it definitively to rest-whether or not Campbell was really teaching what they were excited about. Most ofwhat makes him ofinterest to us today, however, is not even the challenge ofpresenting his theology as a cohesive whole, but the fact that he has an irrepressible influence to keep theologians and pastors from ignoring the multiplicity with which Scriptures treat the question ofthe ultimate des- tinyofall humansbeforetheGodknown in Christtobesovereign love. Those who believe there will be a final rejection ofsome at the end have to contend withchargeofeschatologicaldualism. Thosewhohavenoqualmsaboutteach- ingan unconditionaluniversalism ofsalvation forall—repentance orno repen- tance,faithornofaith-havetocontendwiththeseriousnesswithwhichScrip- tures treat costly grace. James Goodloe’s study sets forth a balanced overview of Campbell’s thought and ofthe contexts in which it emerged and developed. Both sides ofeach debated issue are so even-handedly presented that the serious reader is thrown back on the need to be as clear as possible about what his or her own position is and the reasons for it-even ifthat position be the envious butuntenableone ofapathy. The annotated bibliographythat theauthorpro- vides is arranged chronologically. I would suggest that readers further consult the volume on more ofCampbell’s theology done by Professor Leann van Dyk. Vll JOHN MCLEOD CAMPBELL: ATONEMENT Vlll James Goodloe did his undergraduate work at Davidson College, studied at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, took his doctor’s degree at the University ofChicago, and is now the pastor ofthe Grace Covenant Presby- terian Church, Richmond, Virginia.
