WhileJeffersonwasGovernorofVirginia,hisinfluencewasinstrumentalinanumberof changesatWilliamandMarythatresultedinimportant"firsts"fortheCollege.Thefirstlaw schoolinAmericawasestablishedatWilliamandMary;theCollegealsoadoptedthenation's firsthonorsystem;andachairofmodernlanguageswascreated.In1776,PhiBetaKappa, thenation'sfirstintercollegiatefraternity,wasestablishedatWilliamandMary.And,in1781, byunitingthefacultiesoflaw,medicine,andthearts,theCollegebecameAmerica'sfirsttrue university. WilliamandMarysuspendedoperationsduringtheCivilWarandagainin1881whenitsfi- nancialresourcesweredepleted.PresidentBenjaminEwell,however,kepttheCollegeCharter alivebyringingthebelloftheWrenBuildingtomarktheopeningofeachterm.In1906,the CommonwealthofVirginiapurchasedtheCollege,makingitpartofthestatesystemofhigher education,andin1918,theCollegebecameco-educational.Afteraperiodofsteadygrowth, theCollegegavebirthtofournewcolleges,threeofwhichhavebecomefour-yearinstitutions inurbanareasofVirginia:RichmondProfessionalInstitute,nowVirginiaCommonwealthUni- versity;theNorfolkDivisionoftheCollegeofWilliamandMary,nowOldDominionUniversity; ChristopherNewportCollege,nowChristopherNewportUniversity;andRichardBlandCollege.
