Stephen Botein, then the visiting Editor of Publications at the Institute, attended the conference, saw the promise of one of its sessions, and suggested that several of the papers serve as the basis for a larger volume of essays. He began the project himself, outlined the topics, suggested the title of the prospective volume, and sent out the first invita- tions to other contributors. After Stephen Botein's death in 1986 the present editors carried the work forward, and in editing the essays they have tried to develop his ideas fully. The responsibility for the volume, however, including the introductory essay, remains theirs, though they hope Botein would have been pleased with the result. It is a pleasure to thank Thad W. Tate, director of the Institute when the original conference was held, and Peter A. Clark, a major planner of the conference, for their efforts in organizing that event. The editors are also grateful to the Exxon Educational Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the British Academy, and the British Council for funding the conference.
