Heritage StetsonUniversity,Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity,wasfounded in 1883byHenryA. DeLand,a NewYorkphilanthropist,asDeLandAcademy. In 1887, theLegislatureoftheStateofFloridaenacted theCharterofDeLandUniversityasanindependentandautonomousinstitutionofhigherlearning. Theuniversitynamewaschanged in 1889tohonorJohnB.Stetson,thenationallyknownhat manufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhistimeandmeanstoadvancethequalityandreputationofthe institution,andwhoserved,withMr. DeLandandothers,asafoundingtrusteeoftheuniversity. Thefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheuniversityshouldbe"topromotethegeneral interestsof education,andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengage inthelearnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsof society,andtodischargehonorablyandusefullythevariousdutiesoflife." Stetson'sfirstpresident,Dr.JohnF.Forbes,clearlydescribedthecommitmenttoteachingwhichhas beenahallmarkoftheuniversitythroughoutitshistory: "Buildings, librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveaddedpower,butthevitalcontactofstudents withavigorousandstimulatingmindandheart-thisisthesinequanonofasuccessfuleducation...The mostimportantthingistofindmenandwomenoflargeheartandmind,apttoteachandfullof enthusiasmandstimulatingpower... todevelopinthestudentthehabitofindependentjudgment-of investigatingstatementsandprinciplesforoneself,andthusforoneselfdiscovertheirtruthorfalsity." Mace Maceswereoriginallywarinstrumentsusedfororganizingmayhem,butfromthe 13thcenturyhave beencarriedbythesergeant-at-armsoftheorganization. IntheEuropeanandintheolderAmerican universitiesitsymbolizesthedignityandauthorityofthepresidentandthecorporationortheboardof trustees. Stetson'smace,designedbyEpiscopalianCanonEdwardNasonWestofNewYork,waspresentedto formerpresidentJ.OllieEdmundsin 1956attheMayCommencementceremony. CanonWest,ofthe CathedralChurchofSt.JohntheDivine, isaleadingauthorityonheraldryandtheancientsymbolism onwhichmuchacademicprotocolisbased. Themaceisdescribedherebytheartist: "Stetson'smace isdesignedsothatanyonecouldeasilyplacetheuniversity'sgeographiclocationand charteringpower. ThepalmbudsfromFlorida'sstatesealformabasefortheheadofthemace. The legendaroundthebowlmakestheparticularinstitution'smotiveclear. Thecrenulationsconstitutewhat isknownasa"cantingdevice"sincetheyareaplayontheLatinword"stet"-ofStetson-meaning "mayitstand." Theanchor,heartandcross-repeatedtwiceinornamentingthem-aretakenfromthe sealoftheCityofDeLand. Fromthetopofthemace,risestheshieldoftheuniversity. Themacetakes itsbasicshapefromthemaceoftheBaptistLongParliament,thussignifyingtheBaptistrootsofthe university." ThemacewasmadebyDanielSpencer,mastergoldandsilversmith,ofWilliamComyns&Sons, Ltd.,London. Thefirmwasestablishedin 1645andexamplesoftheircraftworkcanbefoundinSt. Paul'sCathedralandWestminsterAbbey. Medallion ThePresident'sMedallion,wornatallofficialacademicoccasions,wascastforthe inaugurationof formerStetsonpresidentJohnE.Johnsin 1969. Themedallion,castinsilver, istheuniversityseal embracedbyawreathoflaurel. The Stetson Colors TheStetsoncolors,GreenandWhite,wereadoptedaboutthetimeastheSeal. Atthefirst commencementthestagewasdecoratedinGreenandWhite. Itisbelievedthatthecolorswerechosen fromtherichgreenoftheorangetreesandthepurewhiteoftheorangeblossoms,amagnificentsightin thespringthroughoutFlorida'sgreatcitrusbelt. Thecolorwhiterepresentspurityandgreensignifies growth. Academic Attire Thetraditionalpageantryofanacademicprocession,suchastheonewhichopenstoday's Commencementexercises, isoneofthemostimpressivespectaclesofourtime. Itssignificanceis attestedbythearrayofhandsomegownsandvividlycoloredhoodswornbymembersoftheBoardof Trustees, theFaculty,andotherofficersoftheUniversity. Thesedisplaythesymbolsofscholarly attainment. TheearliestillustrationsofgownswornatOxfordUniversityinEnglandsomewhatresemble cassockswornbyEnglishteacherswhofoundgooduseforthehood,orcowl,asprotectionagainst weather. TheAmericansystemofacademicheraldryindicatesthelevelofadegree,thefieldofstudyin whichitwasearned,andtheinstitutionbywhichitwasgranted. TheAmericanmortarboard,derivedfromthesoftOxfordcap, isblack. Itstassel,forholdersofthe bachelor'sandmaster'sdegrees,isusuallyblack,althoughgoldtasselsmaybewornbyholdersofdoctoral degreesandheadsofinstitutions. Thetasseliswornontherightsideofthecapbyundergraduates,on theleftbyholdersofbachelor'sandhigherdegrees. Itisthehoodwhichprovidesacademicregaliaitscolorandoffersthemostinformationaboutits wearer. Thesilkliningofthehoodbearsthecolor,orcolors,ofthedegree-grantingcollegeoruniversity; itsvelvetfacingrevealsthecolorassignedtoeachareaofstudy. Thedoctor'sgownmaybearvelvet trimmingonthefrontandsleeves-suchasdarkblueforDoctorsofPhilosophy(Ph.D.). Afew institutions,mostlyoverseasbutsomeinthiscountry,authorizethewearingofcoloredrobes,departing fromthetraditionalblackandbrightlydisplayingtheofficialcolorsoftheuniversity. Faculty Colors The University Seal Arts,Letters,Humanities White ThecircularsealofStetsonUniversitywasfirst Business,Accountancy Drab adoptedbetween 1889and 1891,aboutthetimethe Economics Copper nameoftheinstitutionwaschangedfromDeLand Education LightBlue CollegetoJohnB.StetsonUniversity. Itfirst FineArts Brown appearedonauniversitycatalogue in 1891. The Journalism Crimson drawingwasbyanartist-in-residenceandapprovedby Law. Purple PresidentJohnForbes,HenryDeLandandJohnB. LibraryScience Lemon Stetson,aswellasbytheBoardofTrustees. The Music Pink Latinmotto,"ProDeoetVeritate,"istranslated"For Oratory(Speech) SilverGray GodandTruth." TheLamp,signifyingtheLightof Philosophy DarkBlue Truth,restsontheBookofWisdom. PhysicalEducation SageGreen Thesealhasbeenalteredslightlyseveraltimesin PublicAdministration PeacockBlue thecourseofStetson'shistory. Thecurrentversion Science GoldenYellow reflectstheuniversity'snewcharter,dated 1995, SocialScience Cream officiallychangingtheuniversity'snamefromJohnB. SocialWork Citron StetsonUniversitytoStetsonUniversity,while Theology Scarlet maintainingitsmostprominentandtraditional elements:TheMotto,theLampandtheBookof Wisdom. GEORGE WILLIAMS R. DOCTOR OF EDUCATION AND COUNSELING A DeLandnativeand life-longresident, the lateGeorgeR. Williams led hisEuclid High SchoolClassof1945 andwentontoearnabachelor'sdegree inagriculturalchemistryfrom TuskegeeUniversity inAlabama in 1949. Hehadcontractedpolioatayoungageand walked with braces, butneverlethisphysicalchallengeshinderhissuccess. Williamshadhopedforacareerasachemist,butopportunitiesforAfricanAmericanswerefew inthe 1950s. HedidfurtherworkatFloridaA6kM Universityand Bethune-CookmanCollege inordertoachievecertificationasateacherand in 1954 tookajobwithVolusiaCountySchools asthediversifiedcooperative trainingcoordinatoratEuclidHighSchool, helpingstudents combineschoolwithjobtraining. Always interested in learningand improvinghimself, hecompletedamaster'sdegree inguidance andcounselingatStetsonUniversity in 1964, makinghimthefirstAfricanAmericantoearna Stetsonmaster'sdegree. In 1968hejoined thestaffofthenewly integrated DeLandHighSchool asacounselor. Stetsontappedhim in 1971 fortheadministrativepostofDirectorofCareerPlanningand Placement, thesameyearthegovernorappointedhim tothe District BoardofTrusteesof DaytonaBeachCommunityCollege. Heserved inbothpositionsthroughthe 1980s. In 1989, theStetsonUniversityNationalAlumniAssociationgavehim itshighesthonor, the Distinguished ServiceAward, notingthathiscareerplacementprogramandAnnualCareer Expositionwerenationallyrecognizedbyplacementprofessionals. Onhisretirement in 1991, Stetsonestablished theGeorgeR. WilliamsScholarshipsforminoritystudents inhishonor. AmemberofSt. Peter'sCatholicChurch,heservedaspresidentoftheboardofdirectorsofthe NeighborhoodCenterofDeLand, theWestVolusiaCouncilonHumanRelations, andtheWest VolusiaBranchoftheNationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColoredPeople. Healso servedonthescreeningcommitteeforthe DeLand HousingandUrbanDevelopmentAuthority. COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER GEORGE WINSTON DOCTOR OF ARTS AND LETTERS BorninMichiganandgrowingupmainlyinMontana,award-winningmusicianGeorgeWinstonmovedto SouthFloridaasateenagerandstudiedsociologyatStetsonUniversityfrom 1967-70. DuringhisStetson years,hevolunteeredregularlyatDeLand'sNeighborhoodCenterandperformedalloverCentralFloridain arockgroupcalledtheTapiocaBallroomBand. Winstonneverstudiedmusicformally;hislifeasaperformerhasbeenshapedbymusicheloves. Inhigh schoolarecordingbyTheDoorsmovedhimfrombeingalistenertobeingaperformer. Heboughtan electronicorganandlearnedtoplayit. "Ilearnedbyusingmusictheory,"hesays,"andbyanalyzingthings offrecordings." In 1971,recordingsfromthe 1920sand'30'smadebylegendarystridepianistsFatsWallerandthelate TeddyWilsonfurtherchangedhislife. Heswitchedtotheacousticpiano,endedhisformaleducation,and movedtoCalifornia. Since 1979hehasstudiedtheplayingofthegreatNewOrleansR.&.Bpianists ProfessorLonghair,JamesBooker,Dr.John,andmostcurrentlyHenryButler. InCalifornia,hedevelopedhisuniquestyleandrecordedhisfirstsolopianoalbum,BalladsandBlues- 1972. Othersfollowedwithgreatsuccess,includingAutumn, WinterIntoSpring, December, Summer, Forest, Linus&Lucy-TheMusicofVinceGuaraldi, Plains,andmostrecentlyNightDividestheDay-theMusicofthe Doors. Autumn(1980)wentgoldinthreecountries,andForest(1994)wonaGrammyaward. Believingthatlivemusicissuperiortorecordings,hegivesmorethan 110soloconcertsayearinthe UnitedStates,Europe,andAsia. Inadditiontothepiano,heusuallyplaystheguitarandtheharmonica duringhisconcerts. HarkingbacktohisdaysattheNeighborhoodCenter,heoftengivesbenefitconcerts andaskshisaudiencestodonatetolocalfoodbanks. Hepreferssmallhallsandhasreturnednumerous timestoStetson'sElizabethHall,wherehelovestoplay,givingbenefitconcertsforStetsonandthe NeighborhoodCenter. HewasfeaturedinaPBStelevisionspecial,GeorgeWinston-SeasonsinConcert,whichincludeslive concertperformancesandinterviews;andhasalsorecordedsolopianoandsologuitarsoundtracksforfour children'sanimatedvideos, includingTheVelveteenRabbit; ThisisAmericaCharlieBrown-TheBirthofthe Constitution; SadakoandtheThousandPaperCranes; PumpkinCircleandBreadComestoLife.
