Heritage StetsonUniversity,Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity,wasfounded in 1883byHenryA. DeLand,a NewYorkphilanthropist,asDeLandAcademy. In 1887,theLegislatureoftheStateofFloridaenacted theCharterofDeLandUniversityasanindependentandautonomousinstitutionofhigherlearning. Theuniversitynamewaschanged in 1889tohonorJohnB.Stetson,thenationallyknownhat manufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhistimeandineanstoadvancethequalityandreputationofthe institution,andwhoserved,withMr.DeLandandothers,asafoundingtrusteeoftheuniversity. Thefirstcharterstatedtheobjectiveoftheuniversityshouldbe"topromotethegeneralinterestsof education,andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengageinthelearnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsof society,andtodischargehonorablyandusefullythevariousdutiesoflife." Stetson'sfirstpresident.Dr.JohnF. Forbes,clearlydescribedthecommitmenttoteaching,which hasbeenahallmarkoftheuniversitythroughoutitshistory: "Buildings, librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveaddedpower,butthevitalcontactofstudents withavigorousandstimulatingmindandheart-thisisthesinequanonofasuccessfuleducation...The mostimportantthingistofindmenandwomenoflargeheartandmind,apttoteachandfullof enthusiasmandstimulatingpower... todevelopinthestudentthehabitofindependentjudgment-of investigatingstatementsandprinciplesforoneself,andthusforoneselfdiscovertheirtruthorfalsity." Themenandwomenwhocomprisetheuniversity'scurrentfacultywouldfindnothingtodisputein thatstatement. Mace Theuseofmacesbycorporationsdatesbacktothe 13thcentury. Maceswereoriginallywar instrumentsusedfororganizingmayhemandwerecarriedbythesergeant-at-armsoftheorganization. In theEuropeanandintheolderAmericanuniversitiesitsymbolizesthedignityandauthorityofthe presidentandthecorporationortheboardoftrustees. Stetson'smace,designedbyEpiscopalianCanonEdwardNasonWestofNewYork,waspresentedto formerpresidentJ.QUieEdmundsin 1956attheMayCommencementceremony. CanonWest,ofthe CathedralChurchofSt.JohntheDivine, isaleadingauthorityonheraldryandtheancientsymbolism onwhichmuchacademicprotocolisbased. Themaceisdescribedherebytheartist: "Stetson'smaceisdesignedsothatanyonecouldeasilyplacetheuniversity'sgeographiclocationand charteringpower. ThepalmbudsfromFlorida'sstatesealformabasefortheheadofthemace. The legendaroundthebowlmakestheparticularinstitution'smotiveclear. Thecrenulationsconstitutewhat isknownasa"cantingdevice"sincetheyareaplayontheLatinword"stet"meaning"mayitstand." Theanchor,heartandcross-repeatedtwiceinornamentingthem-aretakenfromthesealoftheCity ofDeLand. Fromthetopofthemacerisestheshieldoftheuniversity. Themacetakesitsbasicshape fromthemaceoftheBaptistLongParliament, thussignifyingtheBaptistrootsoftheuniversity." ThemacewasmadebyDanielSpencer,mastergoldandsilversmith,ofWilliamComyns&.Sons, Ltd.,London. Thefirmwasestablishedin 1645 andexamplesofitscraftworkcanbefoundinSt. Paul's CathedralandWestminsterAbbey. Page 4 Medallion Stetson University ThePresident'sMedallion,wornatallofficialacademicoccasions,wascastforthe inaugurationof formerStetsonPresidentJohnE.Johns in 1969. Themedallion,cast insilver, istheuniversityseal embracedbyawreathoflaurel. The Stetson Colors TheStetsoncolors,greenandwhite,wereadoptedaboutthetimeastheseal.Atthefirst commencementin 1893 thestagewasdecoratedinGreenandWhite. Itisbelievedthatthecolorswere chosenfromtherichgreenoftheorangetreesandthepurewhiteoftheorangeblossoms,amagnificent sightinthespringthroughoutFlorida'sgreatcitrusbelt. Thecolorwhiterepresentspurityandgreen signifiesgrowth. Academic Attire Thetraditionalpageantryofanacademicprocession,suchastheonewhichopenstoday's commencementexercises,isoneoftheimpressivespectaclesofourtime. Itssignificanceisattestedby thearrayofhandsomegownsandvividlycoloredhoodswornbymembersoftheBoardofTrustees,the faculty,andotherofficersoftheuniversity. Thesedisplaythesymbolsofscholarlyattainment. TheearliestillustrationsofgownswornatOxfordUniversityinEnglandsomewhatresemble cassockswornbyEnglishteacherswhofoundgooduseforthehood,orcowl,asprotectionagainst weather. TheAmericansystemofacademicheraldryindicatesthelevelofadegree,thefieldofstudyin whichitwasearned,andtheinstitutionbywhichitwasgranted. TheAmericanmortarboard,derivedfromthesoftOxfordcap, isblack. Itstassel,forholdersofthe bachelor'sandmaster'sdegrees, isusuallyblack,althoughgoldtasselsmaybewornbyholdersofdoctoral degreesandheadsofinstitutions. Thetasseliswornontherightsideofthecapbyundergraduates,on theleftbyholdersofbachelor'sandhigherdegrees. Itisthehoodthatprovidesacademicregaliaitscolorandoffersthemostinformationaboutits wearer. Thesilkliningofthehoodbearsthecolor,orcolors,ofthedegree-grantingcollegeoruniversity; itsvelvetfacingrevealsthecolorassignedtoeachareaofstudy. Thedoctor'sgownmaybearvelvet trimmingonthefrontandsleeves-suchasdarkblueforDoctorsofPhilosophy. Afewinstitutions, mostlyoverseasbutsomeinthiscountry,authorizethewearingofcoloredrobes,departingfromthe traditionalblackandbrightlydisplayingtheofficialcolorsoftheuniversity. Faculty Colors The University Seal Arts,Letters,Humanities White ThecircularsealofStetsonUniversitywasfirst Business,Accountancy Drab adoptedbetween 1889and 1891,aboutthetimethe Economics Copper nameoftheinstitutionwaschangedfromDeLand Education LightBlue CollegetoJohnB.StetsonUniversity. Itfirst FineArts Brown appearedonauniversitycatalogin 1891. The Journalism Crimson drawingwasbyanartist-in-residenceandapprovedby Law Purple PresidentForbes,HenryDeLandandJohnB.Stetson, LibraryScience Lemon aswellasbytheBoardofTrustees. TheLatinMotto, Music Pink "ProDeoetVeritate,"istranslated"ForGodand Oratory(Speech) SilverGray Truth." TheLamp,signifyingtheLightofTruth,rests Philosophy DarkBlue ontheBookofWisdom. PhysicalEducation SageGreen Thesealhasbeenalteredslightlyseveraltimesin PublicAdministration PeacockBlue thecourseofStetson'shistory. Thecurrentversion Science GoldenYellow reflectstheuniversity'snewcharter,dated 1995, SocialScience Cream officiallychangingtheuniversity'snamefromJohnB. SocialWork Citron StetsonUniversitytoStetsonUniversity,while Theology Scarlet maintainingitsmostpromiiientandtraditional elements:TheMotto, theLampandtheBookof Wisdom. Page 5 Stetson Commencement Speaker University Dr. David Dysart H vytetsonUniversity's 1999 McEniryAwardforExcellence inTeachingrecipient, Dr. David Dysart, isanassociateprofessorofforeignlanguagesknownforboth inspiringandsupporting hisstudents. TheMcEniryAward is themostprestigioushonorgiventoaDeLandcampusfaculty member. Selectionsaremadejointlybyfacultyandstudents, andall 25 recipientshavebeen bothoutstandingscholarsandexcellentteachers. AmemberofStetson'sfacultysince 1991, Dr. Dysartearnedhisdoctorateandmasterof artsdegreesinGermanfromtheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign.TheLos Angelesnativealsoholdsabachelorofsciencedegree inindustrialmanagementfrom AuburnUniversity inAlabama, andwasaFulbright-HaysScholarinGermanybefore completingamasterofinternationalbusinessstudiesdegree attheUniversityofSouth Carolina,Columbia. Dr. Dysart'sareasofexpertise include 19*-centuryGermanliterature, thenovellaandnarrative theory. Hisresearch interestsareTheodorStorm, business German, and theconceptofnationalismand identity inGermanhistory. Dr. Dysart'sstudentspraisehiswillingnesstogivehistimebothinsideandoutsidethe classroom,hissensitivitytotheiracademicdifficulties, andhisabilitytomotivate themto achievetheiracademicpotential. He isespeciallyknownforhis inventiveand lively approaches toteachingeverythingfrombasicgrammartoliteraryanalysis. Thisprofessor's goalisto instillwithinhisstudentsapassionforthesubjectmatter, aswellas learningfor learning'ssake.
