President's Remarks As Florida's first private university, Stetson University sets the standard for qualityteachingand innovative, superiorprograms. We're proud tobe anationally- recognized leader in education with a commitment to values and social responsi- bility. Perhaps most important of all, Stetson is committed to making top-quality, private education affordable to adiverse group ofqualified students. StetsonUniversity'srich tradition began in 1883when itwasfoundedbyaNew York businessman, Henry DeLand, and named for his friend, Philadelphia hat manufacturer,John B. Stetson. The first building on campus, DeLand Hall, is still in use, and it serves as an historic landmark forour town and the University. Today the University maintains two campuses: the DeLand campus, which servesabout2,300studentsin aCollege ofArtsand Sciences, School ofMusic, and School of Business Administration; and the St. Petersburg campus, which serves about 680 students in the College ofLaw. Stetson'sfour collegesand schools offer eleven degree programs in more than fifty-five majors and minors, giving students the best oftwo worlds: the great variety ofa university program coupled with the concern for and interaction with the individual student found at small colleges. Stetson ranks fourth among the top regional universities in the South in the 1999 U.S. Newsand WorldReportnationalsurvey, which alsorecognizesourCollegeofLaw as the best in the nation in trial and appellate advocacyprograms. The Universityisadiverse mix of old and new. While the campusispartofDe- Land's beautiful historic district, listed on the National Register ofHistoric Places, theconstruction ofnewbuildingsand renovation ofthe oldwill help meetthe com- plexrequirementsofthe21stCentury.Thankstoan $11 million,donor-fundedcon- struction program.Stetson hasadded three newfacilitiesand renovatedafourth on the DeLandcampus: the HollisCenter, designed forstudentrecreation andwellness activities; the Wilson Athletic Center, offering new and expanded facilities for our sportand exercise science program and athletics; the first phase ofthe Mandy Stoll TennisCenter; and an enlarged, dramatically upgraded duPont-Ball Library. At the College oflaw in St. Petersburg, astate-of-the-art$9 million Law Libraryand Infor- mation Center was dedicated in September 1998. The Stetson University Hatter baseball team also has a new home: the recentlycompleted Melching Field at Con- rad park, made possible bya majorgift from the familyofthe late R. Dale Melching (Class of'44), and a public-private partnership ofthe City ofDeLand, the DeLand Sports RedevelopmentAssociation, and Stetson. Despite these substantial, progressive improvements, Stetson's focus will al- ways be on the heart ofthe enterprise, which is people and performance.
