SpringerispartofSpringerScience+BusinessMedia(www.springer.com) Preface This volume contains revised versions of the selected papers presented at the 8th biannual meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group (CLADAG) of the Italian Statistical Society, organized by the Department of Economics and ManagementoftheUniversityofPavia,inSeptember2011. Theconferencehasencompassed170presentations,organizedin3plenarytalks and 46 sessions. With 230 attendees from 10 different countries, the conference provided an attractive interdisciplinary international forum for discussion and mutualexchangeof knowledge. The topicsofall plenaryandspecializedsessions were chosen, in a peer-reviewprocess,to fit the mission of CLADAG which is to promote methodological, computationaland applied research, within the fields of classification, dataanalysisandmultivariatestatistics. Thecontributionsinthisvolumewereselectedinasecondpeer-reviewprocess, after the conference. In addition to the fundamental areas of clustering and dis- crimination, multidimensionaldata analysisand data mining, the volumecontains manuscriptsconcerningdataanalysisandstatisticalmodellinginapplicationareas like economics and finance, education and social sciences and environmentaland biomedicalsciences. Wewouldliketoexpressourgratitudetoallmembersofthescientificprogram committee, fortheirabilityinattractinginterestingcontributions.Wealsothankthe sessionorganizers, theinvitedspeakers, thechairpersonsandthediscussantsofall sessions for a very stimulating scientific atmosphere. We are very grateful to the referees, fortheircarefulreviewsofthesubmittedpapersandforthetimespentin thisprofessionalactivity. We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Italian Ministry of Research (PRIN programme), the University of Pavia, the Credito Valtellinese bankinggroupandtheITcompanyISED.We alsothankPRAGMACongressifor theprecioussupportintheorganizationoftheconference.
