State Sovereignty and Intervention Thisuniquebookcontestssovereignty,aconceptwhichuntilrecentlyremained unchallenged within IR theory and international law. HelleMalmvigoffersaFoucault-inspireddiscourseanalysisoftheintervention in Kosovo in 1999 and the non-intervention in Algeria in 1998. The author exploressovereigntyasadiscursiveconstructionandinvestigatesthewaysover- eigntyisaffectedbypracticesofinterventionandnon-intervention.Thedetailed contemporary case studies illustrate that state sovereignty has been constructed differentlyovertime,andalsohighlighthowsovereigntywithinthesamehistor- ical period can be constructed in different and even contradictory ways; state sovereignty varies not only in time, but also in space. Explicitly building on previousconstructiviststudies(inparticular,Walker,Bartelson,andWeber),this new volume pushes existing poststructuralist/constructivist literature on sover- eignty one step further by investigating its spatial variations.
