Every year several thousand students attend Stanly Commu- nity College and each and every one of them enroll for a variety of reasons with many different goals. The stories are all different. Several years ago one of the students featured in a graduate letter in the catalog wanted to teach children, which is why she earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education. Another student wanted to help people in another way, by being a paramedic. He got started in that field by earning a paramedic certificate through our Corporate and Continuing Education Division. Later he earned a degree through a collaborative program we had with Montgomery Community College. Two different people with different goals, but two things in common—a desire to learn and Stanly Community College. These two testimonials are a tribute to those two particular students and also an indication of what can happen when a desire to learn collides with opportunity to do just that. And, that is what we offer our “customers” at Stanly Community College—opportunity. We always highlight the obvious selling points: low-cost tuition, flexible course schedules, small classes, a caring faculty and staff, and a chance for many to stay close to home and earn a two-year college degree. All that and more is true; but the most important ingredient in the equation is not what we bring to the table, but what you bring. Two different people, two different goals, different life circumstances; but one common thread runs through both stories, which is what these students and the thousands of others we serve are about—the desire to learn. Stanly Community College has been offering students with a desire to learn an opportunity to do just that since our first classes were offered in 1972. Through the resources which I mentioned above, we offer our students one basic thing, an opportunity. Dr. Michael R. Taylor President IV Student Profiles • • • Stanly Community College is proud to announce the new Dr. George E. Eddins, Jr., Ambassador Program for SCC students.
