First among them are the members of my immediate family. To Lisa, Meagan, Amy, and Katherine, I give my heartfelt thanks. You have excused me from my duties as husband and father during periods in which I just had to write. Everyday, you give me the love, support, and appreciation that make me who I am. I may write for a larger audience, but I live for you. Thanks to the graduate students with whom I have worked over the years. Your insights teach me more than I teach you. Through your work and your reactions, I better learn how to present material in a manner that can help you do your work. Particular thanks to Cohort V in Virginia State University’s Doctor of Education program. I rest easy knowing that the future of education is in your hands. Robert N. Sickles, publisher and president of Eye On Education, deserves thanks for putting up with a writer’s moods. Through thick and thin, Bob has maintained his integrity and his will to produce the highest quality books. Thanks is also due to those who read and commented on early versions of this manuscript: Stella C. Batagiannis, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne Michael P. Caruso, Loyola Marymount University John Daresh, University of Texas at El Paso Bonnie Fusarelli, North Carolina State University Paul Gallagher, University of South Florida Mark Mitchell, Winthrop University Andrew Pushchak, Edinboro University Peter J. Smith, University of Nebraska, Omaha Jim Upperman, George Mason University Finally, I thank the educational system for teaching me through research, writing, and example. Both experts cited in this book and experts who have not been mentioned have contributed to developing an educational system that is second to none. I wrote this book while standing on the shoulders of the many great educators who continue to do the good and noble work of educating all who will listen. 7 About the Author Dr. Douglas J.
