I don’t know about you, but for me, it seems as if summer 2013 flew by way too quickly! Here it is Labor Day weekend al- ready! They say that time passes more quickly as you get older. I’m beginning to believe that! Over the years, Labor Day has taken on several symbolic meanings. It has come to mean the end of summer. I don’t know if 22nd Sunday in the tradition still holds true, but Labor Day was considered the last day of the year Ordinary Time when it is fashionable to wear white. Labor September 1, 2013 Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons, and up to several years ago, schools didn’t start until after the Labor Day You have approached Mount Zion holiday. Despite all these many symbolic meanings that have developed over the years, like Memorial Day, let’s not lose the original purpose of Labor Day. Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands Welcome Guests of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, the United States Congress in 1894 unanimously voted (wouldn’t that be a and Visitors! rare event in today’s political climate!) to approve rush legislation that We’re so glad you’re here and invite made Labor Day a national holiday. Earlier this year, Pope Francis pointed out, “Work is fun- damental to the dignity of a person….It gives one the ability to maintain oneself, one’s family, to contribute to the growth of one’s own nation.” Unfortunately, millions of workers today are denied this honor and re- spect as a result of unemployment, underemployment, unjust wages, wage theft, abuse, and exploitation. In the 2013 Labor Day Statement by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, we are reminded that “the pain of the poor and those becoming poor in the rising eco- nomic inequality of our society is mounting. Therefore, on this Labor Day 2013, let us renew our commitment to promote the dignity of the human person through work that is honorable, pays just wages, and rec- First Friday ognizes the God-given dignity of the working person.” Eucharistic Adoration On this Labor Day, we keep in prayer the many from our families Begins in September! and parish who are still seeking employment, that they may not lose See page 12 for details. heart and hope.
