On such afudsea are we now afloat, Jlndwe must take the current when it serves, Or hose our ventures. (Julius Caesar, IV.ii.272-78.) During this past year at St. Michael’s College School, we have all been swimming in the tide of Goodness, always flowing, never ebbing. And now, overcome with this flood of emotions at year’s end, seeing the Class of 2017 emerging from the Arch into the world, and the rest of us diving into a summer of refreshment before the next tide, we rejoice with one voice - indeed, in our united chorus of the Hoikety Choik - confident that we have deftly and courageously navigated the shallows and miseries of our voyage of Discipline, all the while striving earnestly to carry ourselves successfully afloat on the full seas of Knowledge. (It’s almost alarming, isn’t it, how there are Shakespearean lines - and ABBA songs too! - to suit any and every situation in life?) As this year closes, overflowing with spirited and joyful ventures, sometimes lost and often gained, the Tower yearbook chronicles these oh! so many ways in which we swam with the currents of our school lives. The retrospective gaze of these colourful and vibrant pages, whenever opened and perused, will happily recall and keep ever alive in our mind’s eye and in our heart of hearts these boisterous and exhilarating affairs of us St. Michael’s Men, showing us ‘ V. again and again who we are and who we are always becoming. It is a tale ever ancient and ever new, a tale steeped in tradition and yet a tale refreshed and renewed by every young man who bleeds Double Blue - a tale that always leads on to good fortune. To the Class of 2017, this Tower is the last yearbook in your SMCS collection, until your son(s) begin to bring theirs home. Cherish the memories that are enshrined here. Come back to St. Mike’s to tell and retell these stories that will never grow old nor stale. To all returning students, let us resolve to repeat everything that is good in this pictorial commemoration of 2016-17, and let us pledge to outdo ourselves next year in fresh and new triumphs of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us! t \j,w Ytj Fr. Jefferson M.
