In 1998 and in 2013, I was privileged to be in the Holy Land. On our pilgrimage we went to the biblical town to Capernaum and stood in that very synagogue we read about in today’s gospel. Now a ruin, that place still echoed the astonishment of those assembled there on the day that Jesus came to teach and heal. I’m sure those people present for the events of the gospel went away not only amazed but energized as well. But what happened the next day, the day after the Sabbath? There is always the next day. That’s Monday for us. Sunday, our day of worship, the Sabbath of the New Covenant, is meant to be a time for you and me to step back and reflect on the work of God in our lives throughout the past week. Some calendars want to put Sunday as the last day of the week. But the deep symbolism in remembering that Sunday is the first day of the week helps us to understand that our faith is not a left-over but the beginning point of all we do. Sunday, the first day of the week, requires of us a different kind of work. A work that does not directly put an extra dollar in the pocket or satisfy our own personal desires; but one that is invaluable if you or I want to know the joy and peace that money and ceaseless activity cannot bring. Spending some quality time resting with God can pay off big during the remainder of the week. It is on Monday and the days following that you and I need the benefits of the nourishing rest that Sunday can afford. Even if I have to do some work or if you are on a shift, Sunday can still be honored as time for you and God to spend together. Say an extra prayer or take some time during lunch to read a little scripture. Try to be very conscious of your connection to God and God’s connection with you and act out of that knowledge when dealing with other people. Jesus was able to both teach and heal on the Sabbath. The teaching is expected but the healing is a work, and work was forbidden on the Sabbath of the Old Law. Yet Jesus, who brings the fulfillment of the Old Law, can work this work because it draws Him and the people closer to God and God’s healing peace. We too can engage in this kind of work, a good work for others. Visiting the sick and the homebound is certainly one of the best ways to bring Jesus’ love to fellow parishioners, family and friends. This kind of work does not exhaust me or you but is energizing. When the Holy Spirit works through us, we are the better for it. Ava has been a student at St. Michael School since kindergarten. She plays basket- ball and volleyball and runs track and cross country for the Warriors. Outside of school, Ava says, “I play tennis and I love to ‘just dance.’ Sometimes I work with my dad in movies. I also volunteer at an animal shelter.” Ava’s favorite thing about SMS is all of her friends, and she says she will miss all of her friends when she leaves because they will all go to different schools. Ava’s advice to younger students is to be nice to everybody and to enjoy their time at SMS. Good luck in your future, Ava! Website: www.stmichaelparish.life Page 5 January 28, 2018 Education and Formation Commission continued Fourth Graders Teach Others About the Love of Reading Through Acting The 4th grade class at St. Michael School held a class play for the school, parents, family and Fr. Marty and Fr. Gregory on January 16th in the school gym. Our play was “Sir Bookworm.” The short little play was about a modern day girl in 2018 who thought books were no longer needed in a technology based world she lives in. She was arguing with the bookworms that reading is a waste of time. The girl gets so bored with what is said, she falls asleep. The characters of the books come off the shelves to defend themselves that reading is still cool in 2018. The class did a great job and worked hard during this little Reader’s Theatre. Reader’s Theatre helps improve reading fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension while incorporat- ing drama, art and movement into the learning process. It was a fun way to take a different approach into our school curriculum. The students and I will always have this memory of our fourth grade play. Article submitted by Mrs. Lynn Fisher Photos by Mr. Patrick Massoels SMS Open House Last weekend, St. Michael School opened their doors for their annual Open House and Spaghetti Lunch. The day began with the students participating in the 11:30 AM Mass as the lectures, cantors, and choir. And when it was all said and done, the students thanked the church for all its support this year and invited everyone across the street. Families, both new and old, joined in the fun for the Spaghetti Lunch and Scholastic Book Fair. New families toured the classrooms, looking at school projects and seeing just how technology plays a role at SMS. Father Marty and Father Gregory walked the halls among the teachers, all with smiles on their faces as they greeted parents and children alike. It was a wonderful afternoon of community, food and friendship. The next St. Michael School Open House will be February 25th from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM. All are welcome to take part in the Pancake Breakfast and fun!
