St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish Guide Book St. Gabriel the Archangel 5505 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40291 Dear St. Gabriel Parish Member, God has entrusted to us many gifts - families, friends, earthly goods, talents, skills, our very lives - everything we have comes from our most generous God! Good stewards recognize these gifts, develop them, use them and share them, in justice, with others. A significant way to share our gifts and put our faith into action is through a life lived in grateful stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. The St. Gabriel Guide Book provides you with an overview of opportunities for you to get involved in parish life. Published annually, the Guide Book provides you with a glimpse of the history and culture of St. Gabriel Parish, along with parish contact lists, FAQs entitled “How Do I…”, and a complete listing of our diverse ministry opportunities. Your stewardship time & talent commitment card will be arriving in the mail shortly. You will use this Guide Book, or access it online at www.stgabriel.net, to review stewardship opportunities; then complete and return the stewardship commitment card. The commitment period is July 2017 - June 2018. We ask all of our parish households to actively participate this year in at least two ministry areas. You will be contacted by a ministry leader no later than July 2017 so you can start getting involved and engaged in the ministry of your choice. Your participation is crucial to our parish planning. The 2015-2019 Parish Strategic Plan has provided us with a roadmap. It is a living, breathing reflection of our desire for our parish family’s future. And, our future is bright—as of July 2016, we have 18 acres of land upon which to create a common dream—St. Gabriel Park. In 2016, we have filled key roles on our faith formation team. We are making plans and raising money to build a much-needed playground on our existing campus. Forward thinking and forward movement abound here. But, now is the time for every one of us to dig deep for we will all be called upon to give even more of our time, talent and treasure for the glory of the God who made us. When many of us hear the word “stewardship”, we often think that it speaks solely of “money.” That is not the case at Saint Gabriel Parish. A life lived in the attitude and practice of stewardship is essentially about doing that which God wants us to do with the gifts He has given us. Whatever you decide, I would like to thank you for being a part of this parish community, and for helping all of us share in the mission and ministry of Jesus. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Reverend John A. Schwartzlose Pastor 2 St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish Guide Book Mission Statement The Catholic Community of St. Gabriel the Archangel  Praising God  Proclaiming the Good News  Serving others  Building community This Directory is for parish purposes ONLY. Saint Gabriel does not endorse the use of the names or addresses of parishioners listed within this directory for solicitation use. History of St. Gabriel the Archangel The idea to establish a Catholic parish in Fern Creek originated in 1910. At that time, there were only a few Catholic families in the area, so the idea was dismissed. In 1953, Archbishop Floersh with the help of Father James G. Emrich established our parish. There were 200 families and the opening of GE’s Appliance Park nearby was expected to increase that number rapidly. A meeting was held on November 9, 1953, at the home of George Long, Sr. (one of the original members of the movement). The purpose of the meeting was to present Father Emrich with $4,800, which had been collected over the 43-year period, to help construct St. Gabriel Church and School. In the beginning, Mass was celebrated in Fern Creek High School’s auditorium. On the site of 8.5 acres at the corner of Bardstown Road and Hudson Lane, which had been obtained, construction began on a combination church and school. Work began on the rectory in 1954. Then, as now, the men and women of the parish donated their time and talents to hold down building costs. On January 9, 1955, Father Emrich moved into the new rectory. In the spring of 1956, a convent for the sisters was begun. It was completed in August of that year. The first teaching staff included four Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and three lay teachers. The school, eight classrooms and a cafeteria, opened September 24, 1956. Enrollment was 294 students. Although the church was not quite complete, the first Mass was celebrated on December 16, 1956. St. Gabriel Church was not officially dedicated until January 12, 1958. 3 St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish Guide Book As the Catholic population in Fern Creek grew, so did the need for enlargement of the school. Six classrooms were added in 1958 and two more in 1960. There were then 634 students. Several additions were made from 1981 through 1987: the cafeteria doubled in size, four new classrooms were built, and the convent was converted into a new learning center, a kindergarten room, a teacher’s lounge, and computer room. In January 2017, we find ourselves with 2124 families, and one of the largest schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville with 740 students (preschool-8), and a religious education program of 93 students (preschool through high school). We completed, in 1994, an ambitious building program, which included a new Church, a new multipurpose building and the renovation of the former Church for school classrooms, computer room, and Parish staff offices. In August 2001, we completed the construction project to increase our kitchen, renovate the cafeteria, double our library and computer rooms, and add classrooms and a childcare area, additional Parish offices and work areas. Since then, we’ve updated our school facilities with renovated restrooms, new energy-efficient windows, installation of a keyless entry system and Smartboards for each classroom. In August 2015, we completed a renovation of our preschool which expanded capacity to 106 preschool students, allowing for continued growth of our school. We are thriving – in July 2016 we completed a purchase transaction of 18 acres at 5119, 5121, and 5201 Bardstown Road for future development. May God continue to bless our efforts to serve the People of God in our Community and allow us to be good stewards of our gifts.
