Page 2 Dear Parishioners, Happy New Year—Belatedly! Let me be the last one, hopefully, to offer you a toast and a prayer for a happy, healthy, and holy year for you and all of your loved ones. I know this can sound trite or sanctimonious or read “isn’t that nice.” But as we enter this new year I am more aware of the challenges that lie ahead of us as a nation (i.e., fiscal cliff, higher prices and taxes, pension reform, etc.), as a community (more homeless coming to the rectory door, etc.), and as a parish (handing on the faith, financial concerns, etc.), and I am struck by the even more important impact of what it means to be happy, healthy, and holy. Happy—to be more joyful, content, and caring for others, would seem to be a great start for a newer perspective, as opposed to being angry or indifferent or selfish. Healthy can go in a variety of ways—physical, mental, emotional, are just a few and very critical ones that we all need to maintain or do better at. But I’m thinking more of a spiritual health and, specifically, of a line from the Book of Tobit: “Do to no one what you yourself dislike.” It’s a different version of the Golden Rule — “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If we were just a little more thoughtful, kinder, gentler, perhaps there would be a lot less violence in our streets and a lot less heartbreak among families, friends, and parents. The holiness aspect builds on this spiritual health and one that Matthew Kelly writes about in his book, The One Thing: Passing Faith on to Children. In it he writes as a father of an infant son and what would be the one thing he could teach his son to ensure his appreciation of Catholicism. And that is the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist! He doesn’t hold back or candy coat things or glass over certain other aspects. He simply concludes that Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist, is a gift that transforms him into becoming the Best Version of himself, or as he states “. . .when I receive the Eucharist . . .it’s a moment where I get to receive who and what I wish to become.” My toast and prayer for all of us is that we’ll all have successful and incredible years, and that it will mean we’ve become more happy, healthy, and holy!. Have a great week and a fantastic new year! Evangelization Cultural Context Generally, under the pressure of many forces (secularism, relativism, atheism, indifference, attacks on human dignity, etc.), our present culture continues to disintegrate in many sectors and is crying out for help. Blessed John Paul II challenged us, echoing the Scriptures, to “be not afraid” to proceed with a new evangelization, and to promote and develop a culture of life and hope. Today, it is urgent for Christians to believe and proclaim, to live and serve, and to celebrate the Gospel of Jesus Christ with “new ardor, new methods, and new expression”. Therefore, let us commit ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God and to bringing the gift of His saving love and power through the Holy Spirit to everyone. Our Catholic faith is truly a gift from God that is to be passed on to others. BABY BOTTLE PROJECT RESULTS A big THANK YOU to all who participated in the Baby Bottle Project. St. Catherine’s parish raised $4,587.57 as a result of your generosity. That is fantastic, especially considering these are hard times for all. This money will go to the Women’s Center which will directly assist mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Thank you to all for your generous support of life! Page 3 Youth Ministry Alerts! Terry Landstrom—Youth Minister (708) 638-4322 NEWS FLASH! Mission New York, New York! Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents. 2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home. 3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians. 4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of accidents involve these forms of transportation. 5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. So, above all else, avoid hospitals. But… ...you will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at CHURCH! And . . . ...Bible Study is safe, too! The percentage of deaths during Bible Study is even less, so attend church and read your Bible; it will save your life! (Under same management for over 2,000 years.)
