Initially it was multi-ethnic and liter slipped into three separate parishes, one Polish, one French and St. Bernard's remaining predominantly Irish. This pub- lication contains information taken from the parish records. Book Format This document contains listings of records of events which occurred at St. Bernard Church. The records are listed in alphabetical order. Date: As listed in the original ledgers the date was often broken in+o two dates. The first date reflected the date of baptism or death and the second was the date of birth and of the funeral (and often burial.) At times only one date is given. Interpretation is at the discretion of the reader. Name: Names are listed alphabetically with the last name first followed by the first and middle names. The records are old, difficult to read, and occasionallyillegible. The early records were in Latin, which compounded the probl-em. Efforts were made to reproduce the names exactly as recorded to preserve accuracy and integrity of the records excePt for translating given names from Latin. On rare occasions the gender of the Latin name was not able to be differentiated. In those instances both name versions were given. While we believe names were often misspelled, we made no attempt to correct them as it would reduce the integrity of the records and possi- bly change accurate spellings which have changed over time. we have included a listing of alternative name spellings to assisti n locating records. When the name was reproduced with great difficulty, it was followed by a question mark. The age of the individual, when given, follows the name. Birthplace: While the ledger indicated this information to be place of birth, we suspect that the information was more accurately represented as residence. Burialplace: Most of the burials occurred at the local Catholic Cemetery, renamed Holy Cross Cemetery in 1921. When the records indicated Potters Field, we believe this to be a designated section of Holy Cross Cemetery. In some instances other burial places are indicated. Relationships/Comments: Often the names of parents, spouse and/or other com- ments were made in the records. This information, when given, is below the name of the individual. Godparents/Witnesses: In baptismal and marriage records the godparentso r wit- nessesw ere enclosedi n brackets.P arents'n ames were seDaratedw ith a slash.T his work was completed in February, 1995. History The history of St. Bernard Catholic Church began April 13, 1861,t he day after the civil war began. on that day Bishop Frederick Baraga,b ishop of Sault Ste Marie, purchasedt wo lots on the north side of chisholm Streetb etween Tenth and Eleventh Streetsf or a church.
