Headmaster's 2010-2011 Review We started out the year by putting the School's best face forward with the launch of our redesigned website, prominently featuring William Secular's award-winning videos. Combined with our growing use of social media and increased live-streaming of events, the world has a clear picture of what the Andrean community has long known - St. Andrew's College is truly not an ordinary place. As I r eflect on the year's accomplishments and achievements, I r ealize the theme of "Brotherhood, Greater than Self", as chosen by this year's Prefects, was an inspired choice. I d on't believe that I've heard a better phrase to describe the Andrean experience. How else than through the concerted effort of the 570-strong membership that constituted this year's brotherhood of Andreans could so much have been achieved, and so many memories created, in just 10 months? It s eems that each year surpasses the last, and this year is no exception. Our students have enjoyed outstanding successes academically, artistically and athletically, on the school grounds and beyond the gates. With countless reasons for pride and celebration, it's impossible to recount them all; however, leafing through these pages will certainly help •* evoke memories of all these special times as the years pass by. Many events are etched in my mind, starting with the enthusiastic Homecoming celebrations in September that got the ball rolling for an action-packed fall that included the Dramatic Art Society's fantastic production of A Chorus Line, and Holiday Heroes, a program that illustrates well the power of our collective efforts as together we raised $35,000 worth of gifts for 70 families in the community. In January, school spirit swelled when the 1st Hockey Team won gold in the MacPherson Hockey Tournament. During March Break students on the annual Battlefields Tour to France and Belgium were honoured with a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to attend the reburial ceremony of an unknown First World War Canadian soldier. St. Andrew's Pipes & Drums Band continues to bring us glory, whether winning awards at competitions, leading Cadets in Concert, the Church Parade down Yonge Street, or the annual Cadet Inspection, this year attended by Brigadier-General Gary O'Brien, Chief of Staff -Army Reserves. Of course, Focus is always eagerly anticipated and this year's 26-play event involved over a hundred participants. The "All the Single Ladies" dance number in Glee is sure to f^ve everyone talking for many years to come! / ' . Athletically, it w as another banner year with a record 56 teams competing in 23 sports, capturing 12 team championships that included 18 second-place finishes and 15 third- place finishes, along with house league and intramural play. Certainly we will long remember the unusually rainy spring that saw games cancelled and athletes slogging it o ut on wet muddy fields in true Andrean spirit. The completion of the $6 million project to redevelop the Upper Fields into state-of-the-art athletic facilities is expected to be finished by year's end and will provide vastly improved playing conditions for years to come with its synthetic turf field, six-lane running track, and a full baseball diamond. You will certainly have your own special memories of the 2010-201 1 academic year, which combine to make the legacy that is St. Andrew's and foster links that strengthen the brotherhood bond. I w ould like to extend a huge thank you to Mr. Steve Kimmerer and all the students who spent countless hours taking photos, writing text and designing layout for this edition of The Review. It i s a tireless task, but provides us with memories of a lifetime. , V Yours in brotherhood, Headmaster Kevin McHenry ■ Left to Right: Cameron Kearley, Aidan Romeril, Patrick Ottaway, Michael Mildon, I Jason Barron, Colin Glenn, Dylan Graham, Matthew Whitelaw, Ali Akbar, Ross Hinds, 1 Akash KC, Frank Chung, Sam Wong, Toby Lym, Robert Williams, Jon Knowles, 1 David Head, Tom Stern, Fabian Andark iThe Prefects 1 SAINTS BASKETBALL ny McConnell Seung Memoriam Clare Kowaltschuk (1973-2011) I w as recently approached to write something for the Review about a dear friend. Clare Kowaltschuk. I h ave to admit, I w as extremely honoured. Clare had so many friends, and we all cared for her so much. Because she made such a significant impact on the entire St. Andrew's community, I w ould like to make sure I i nclude some of the words and feelings of her students and colleagues as well. Clare passed away in January 201 1, and not only did I lose my best friend, but St. Andrew's lost one of its most beloved teachers and coaches. Her wonderful husband, Mr. Adam Kowaltschuk (aka Mr. K.), teaches in the Middle School, and this has helped members of the Andrean community cope with her death and keep her memory alive at the School. Clare asked me to make sure that her little boy, Nathan, would walk the halls in a few years as a student, and I k now that everyone will support this and make it a reality. Clare first came to SAC in 1999. She taught for one year, and returned in 2002 with Mr. K. to teach geography in the Upper School. She coached 1st tennis and alpine skiing, and became a favourite among the students. Clare learned she was pregnant in 2005, while she and Mr. K. were Assistant Housemasters in Macdonald House. Only a few months before her baby was due, Clare discovered she had breast cancer. The next four ears, were devastating for Clare and her family. She taught so many people about courage and hope, lare once said, "You don't think of yourself as courageous when you have to face something like this. You 10 what you have to do to survive. Every parent knows that when your kids need you, you have to put them rst. I was a mother more than I w as a cancer victim. In many ways, I feel as though Nathan saved me." roughout her battle, she loved Nathan, and was a beautiful mother. Her greatest fear was that he would not member her. However. Clare is still very much with us. She told Nathan that she would become a star in t le sky, and watch over him. We can still feel her energy, and I k now that she is looking down on all of us - I r otecting her family and friends. I wing this past school year, I w ould often visit Clare after work. She was always thrilled to see me and hear lOut my day. She always wanted to know what was happening at school and if I h ad any gossip. She missed icihrtisn. g. the students, and all of the staff at the School. She wanted to continue being a part of the Andrean munity, and often came to the School to speak with the boys, and support them with their fundraising s amazed, but not shocked, to see so many of her past students attend her memorial service. She had a lendous impact on her students. Brendan McCullough '03 writes, "1 will always remember the ear-to-ear iC 'Mrs. K.' always had when all the boys would filter into class causing trouble and being loud. You id tell she loved what she did every day."" All of her students thought highly of her. Tyler Munro '06 said thiskibout Clare. "Mrs. K. is an excellent teacher, not just because of the things she taught me in class, but becluse of the real wisdom she possesses and was able to teach me every day that I s aw her."' Adam Parent "03fiescribed Clare's personality perfectly, "She helped me because she cared, as she cares for anyone that entis her life." This trait was evident not only with her students, but evetyone who met Clare. 1 f iet met Clare at St. Andrew's when we were both teaching grade 8 geography. How fortunate I was to teafc with such a p assionate geographerl She and I m ade a great team, and we worked closely together during thaByear. All of the faculty at the School will also agree that Mrs. K. was a pleasure to work with. Mr. Joiner, th«Ljeography Department Head says this about Clare. "Honesty, empathy, and enthusiasm are Clare's simature traits." Mr. McHenry truly valued Clare as an outstanding educator and commented on how much thifboys respected her as a teacher and as a person. ir sister, Jane Kravchenko, also a former teacher at SAC, wrote, "As a teacher of geography, she was issionate and had a fervent love of people, places and adventure. She didn't just talk about what was over re: she went over there and brought some of it back. Her classroom extended way beyond the walls of tC ' T here is no doubt that Mrs. K. was among the finest teachers this institution has ever had. would want me to pass along a message of encouragement to all of you to do what you believe in, and ae m ai n duitfef.e rence in this world. Believe in yourself, and live for today. Every day is precious, so don't longer fret the small stuff, and I w ill think of Clare every day of my life. She reminds me to smile, and e life to the fullest. The St. Andrew's community so graciously supported Clare throughout her battle, and need to now continue to remember her legacy, and make her proud. We will all miss this speciat.jgagfeer, end, and colleague, ndi Berman
