Thursday, January 10, 2013 Dear St. Luke Parents, Happy New Year! Even though it has only been four days since returning from Christmas break, we are off and running. January is a special month because we celebrate being Catholic and being part of St. Luke Catholic School. We will end the month with a weeklong Catholic Schools Week celebration. This year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Raise the Standards” supports the recent launch of the National Standards and Benchmarks for effective Catholic elementary and secondary schools. Following the National Standards and Benchmarks helps promote high academic standards and Catholic identity. This theme is especially relevant for St. Luke School, a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School, where raising the standards in faith, academics and social growth is our goal each and every day. We look forward to celebrating St. Luke School with the following activities: (cid:0) Sunday, January 27 St. Luke School Celebrates the Liturgy 9:00 a.m. Family Mass in St. Luke School Gym 10:00 a.m. Open House for current families 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Open House and tours for perspective families (cid:0) Monday, January 28 St. Luke School Celebrates Academic Excellence Students may wear clothing showing support for the school of their choice. Students will use their can of soup to cast their vote for the Super Bowl XLVII Champ. Bringing a can of soup allows students to be out of uniform for the day. Students are encouraged to wear their favorite football team jersey or Bearcat Spirit Wear. We are able to celebrate St. Luke Catholic School because you have made the commitment to Catholic education for your child(ren). Thank you for choosing St. Luke School. We are grateful every day that you are here with us. Peace, Therese Craig Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. St. Luke Parish School Announces the 2013 Dinner Dance & Auction Honorees: Dr. Meredith (Bud) and Sheila (Clements) Murray We are pleased to announce the honorees for the 2013 St. Luke School Dinner Dance & Auction "Blue Ribbon Gala" are Sheila (Clements) and Dr. Meredith (Bud) Murray. It is a poignant reflection on the excellence of St. Luke School, as we celebrate our Blue Ribbon award, by honoring one of St. Luke's most beloved former teachers. Sheila grew up in the Clifton Park neighborhood of Lakewood, Ohio where she attended St. James Parish School, St. Augustine High School, and St. Mary of the Woods College, where she graduated with degrees in education and English. Bud ’44 a St. Luke School alumni, went on to Fenwick, College of the Holy Cross, and finally the Loyola University Medical School. Years after Bud and Sheila had lost their spouses, Deacon Paul and Clare Faherty suggested to Sheila that she have dinner with Bud Murray. Hesitantly two years later in 1994, Sheila decided to ask Bud as her guest to the St. Luke School Dinner Dance & Auction. Bud proved a very worthy guest and in 1995 Sheila and Bud were married. They have been complementing each other very well in marriage for 18 years now. They are blessed with seven children, three of Bud's, and four of Sheila's, and are kept busy with 22 grandchildren. Bud and Sheila Murray have been extremely generous with their time, talent and treasure to the St. Luke community and many ministries including the Ministry of Care, Eucharistic Ministry and with the Learning Center. Sheila was one of the most beloved teachers at St. Luke for 25 years. Her calm demeanor and care for children helped many generations of St. Luke students get through the challenges of learning. She retired from teaching in 1996. Prior to his retirement in 1998 Bud was an OB‐ GYN doctor and actually helped deliver many of the students that Sheila ended up teaching. It cannot be more fitting as we celebrate our National Blue Ribbon award of Excellence that we honor Sheila and Bud Murray, a couple completely committed and dedicated to Catholic education who live lives of service to St. Luke Parish and the Catholic Church. The 24th Annual Dinner Dance and Auction "Blue Ribbon Gala" will be held on February 23, 2013, at the Oak Park Country Club. We hope you can join us. Congratulations, Sheila and Bud! Invitation Stuffing Party – Saturday, January 19 Join us for a morning of collating fun at the Dinner Dance invitation stuffing party beginning at 8:00am on Saturday, January 19. Julie and John Hendricks are our hosts for this productive party—coffee and breakfast snacks will be served while we get the invitations assembled and ready to mail. Come by whenever you can get there, and stay for as long as you want! The Hendricks are at 718 Franklin, River Forest. Please contact Julie if you are interested in helping: call 708-488-8927 or email [email protected]. Many hands make work light—and entertaining! Program Book Advertisements and Tribute Ads You can help recognize this year's honorees Sheila and Bud Murray by attending the Dinner Dance on February 23—and by placing a personal or business ad in the Dinner Dance program book. You will be acknowledging them and supporting the Dinner Dance at the same time! The program book is distributed to over 300 Dinner Dance attendees and supporters, so it is an ideal way of gaining exposure for your business in the St. Luke community. For details and rates on program ad, please contact Noreen McKenty Leavy at [email protected]. The deadline for ad submission is January 28. Or, place a personal or tribute ad in the Dinner Dance program book and extend you or your family wishes to Sheila and Bud on this well-deserved honor. For details and rates, contact Peter Kennedy or Sheila Price at [email protected]. Raffle ticket “Early Bird” deadline is approaching! Don’t forget the Early Bird Deadline: students who sell all twenty of their tickets and return them by January 18 will be eligible for a special drawing for an iPad mini. Subsequent drawings offer $50 and $25 gift cards. Tickets should be returned to your child’s teacher. Remember, the money raised from this raffle will help offset the difference between the tuition you pay vs. the actual cost it takes to educate a St. Luke student. Auction “Wish List” items If you’d like to donate something for our Live or Silent Auctions, contact Colleen Weiler at 708-710-8714 or [email protected], or Maribel Jimenez at 773-908-1272 or [email protected]. NITED TATES RMY ESERVES December 14th of 2012 will go down as one of my memorable days. I was sworn in to serve as Chaplain in the United States Army Reserves. I am really humbled by this experience. I did not expect all these coming so soon, but two days prior to this event I received an email informing me that Ch(CPT) Cesar C. Pajarillo, Jr., USAR, will be administering my swearing-in ceremony. He suggested that the swearing in could take place at the school so that we give the kids an opportunity to think of civil services and vocation in another way. Hopefully we achieved both. Only God knows and time will tell someday. Before I came to St. Luke, I was working with the recruiters for Catholic priests for the Army to see how I can use my vocation and call as priest to minister in the Army. There is so a need for Catholic priests, I felt the urge to give it a try and see where the Spirit of God moves me. At the moment, I am going to continue to be here at St. Luke. I believe in the near future I will be required to attend The Basic Leadership training course that takes three months. That would entail going to North Carolina for training. So far I haven't been informed when I will be beginning my training. Swearing-in is just the first step towards doing that. I wont be leaving St Luke’s. It’s my home and I love it, unless things or situations dictate otherwise. I may just go for the training then come back here. But again, out of obedience, I will follow the military directives. As of now, I still don't know where I will be working. I promise to keep you updated on the matter and as soon as I have some useful information that is in store for me, I’ll let everyone know. Once again, thank you very much and may God Bless you all and pray for me as I also promise to keep you in my prayers. Fr. Charles Musula
