The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of the people and places of Canisteo’s past. Steve Cotton has lived his entire life in Canisteo. He has had an interest in local history since his childhood. His ancestors moved to Canisteo in 1868 settling in the north east corner of the town. His great grandfather was constable and his great grandmother a licensed midwife. A 1977 graduate of Canisteo Central School, Steve has pursued a career in IT (information technology) for hospital patient fi nancial services. He is currently em- ployed as a consultant. Cotton has been actively involved with the Kanestio Historical Society since 1990. An avid genealogist he has helped many people from across the county research the local family tree archives and has recorded detail information on Canisteo’s local cemeteries. He compiled this book as love for the rich history of the community and it’s his way of sharing a glimpse of our past with others. Canisteo, $21.99, Arcadia Publishing. Can you name the rest? LOCALLY GROWN BEEF & PORK Dear Editor, So once again the Norfolk Southern Railroad Corporation, a private corporation under the regulatory um- brella of the Public Service Commission, is being allowed to close Addison Village’s only Bridge crossing the Canisteo River to all traffi c. This causes a major inconvenience and loss of business, as well as a safety 408 E River St, Elkland, PA hazard, both to village residents and the thousands of commuters and truckers passing through daily. This is the second time in recent memory. Is there no remedy? (814) 258-7283 Historically, the old suspension bridge pictured above would have conveniently provided this remedy, and at Hours: a later time could have been rebuilt by modern construction methods, if, with foresight by Village Offi cials, the right of way from Front St. had been preserved. Mon. - Fri. 8:30 - 5 During the construction of the levee system protecting the Village in the mid 40’s, there was a temporary bridge at Wade’s Crossing aligned with Wall Street and crossing the river to Colwell St. This was also a Sat. 9 - 12 convenient crossing to directly access Addison’s only school at the time, as well as the rest of the Village. Also existing at least to the 1960’s was an easterly extension of Water St. From Wade’s Crossing for about 1100’ to a RR crossing accessing Front Street at the fi rst bend. This was used frequently when trains were stopped for long periods blocking the Main Street crossing. Speaking of which, for those who remember Elmer Bovee, our police chief and only offi cer of the law for many years, he reputedly remedied the too fre- quent crossing blockages by issuing the train engineer a traffi c ticket returnable in town court, where there was not much sympathy for the RR. See us at the Addison Post It’s called “hindsight” or “ lack of foresight”, but the aforementioned possible alternative river crossings are for all your photo now “water under the non-existent bridges” so to speak. In terms of any possible solutions presently available, why have our Village Offi cials not legally challenged copy needs this 2-3 day closure in an attempt to require a practical solution or alternative?
