MI N IC K Introduction(cid:1) M y first experience with finishing the process, and I knew how good the re furniture was typical of most sults could be. woodworkers: I used a bru sh Numerous compressorsand spray guns to lay on varnish, and the resultswere less later, I can say that I am fairly competent at than spectacular. Eventually I discovered spraying finishes.Although the road to pro wipe-on finishes, which produced a more ficiency was paved with drips and runs, attractive result.Still,I found the process spray finishing wasn't any more difficult slow and the available finisheslimited. So than a lot of other woodworking tech I decided early on to learn how to spray niques I've mastered. And unlike many finish.Because I had some expe rience with woodworkers who stillstruggle with rags painting cars, I was somewhat familiar with and brushes,I can honestly say that I enjoy 2 finishing. The tools are fun to use and I love the results. Many woodworkers shy away from spraying finishes, wary ofthe need for more equipment, ventilation, overspray, dust problems, learning curve, etc. But the truth is, you can get by with just a few ba sic tools- a midsize compressor,a gravity feed HVLP gun, and a cheap window fan-as long as you stick with water-based finishes.Let me repeat that:aslong asyou stick with water-based finishes.Solvent basedfinishes, because oftheir flammability, must be sprayed with proper explosion proof light fixtures and exhaust fan motors. The only exception is if you work out doors away from any source ofignition. -Anatole Burkin,editor-in-chief of Fine Woodworking 3
