TRIBUTE TO PAT DUFFY

The Sport Coaches’ Handbook was the brainchild of professor
Pat Duffy, a prominent figure in the world of coaching. Pat
served as vice president for strategy and development at the
International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE), chair of
the European Coaching Council, professor of sport coaching
at Leeds Beckett University (UK), and cochair of the ICCE–
Association of Summer Olympic International Federations
project group that developed the International Sport Coaching
Framework. He was also a key figure in developing coaching
in his native Ireland as head of the National Coaching and
Training Centre (now Sport Ireland Coaching).
Pat brought visionary leadership and passion to his work in
coaching and coach development. Indeed, he was the driving
force in the conception of this book in 2012 as part of a broader
publishing plan agreed to by the ICCE and Human Kinetics.

That plan also included the International Sport Coaching
Framework and the International Sport Coaching Journal. The
framework, now a version advanced from the original, has
profoundly influenced coach education and coaching around
the world, as many sport federations and organizations have
adopted or adapted it to best serve their needs and aims. The
journal has also developed beautifully, thanks in large part
to the splendid, dedicated stewardship of Wade Gilbert, who
served as editor in chief from 2014-2019. No doubt, Pat would
be pleased with the quality and progress of these publications
in serving their intended purposes.
Pat might be less pleased that it took so long for the third
piece of the plan—the handbook he envisioned as the link
between the framework’s concepts and principles and front-
line coaching practices—to be completed. But here it is, solely
due to the inspiration that Pat still provides for all whom
he taught, advised, and addressed in presentations; all with
whom he worked, joked, collaborated, and shared a pint; and
all who admired and respected such a learned and accom-
plished leader in his field wh最新o资料最新资料 could be so humble, caring,
and inspired to do better and do more.
We agreed to edit this book not only because it was needed
but also because the project was so important to Pat. We each
considered Pat a friend and a great guy and respected his
efforts to professionalize coaching and promote its scientific
bases. We hope that this work advances the field of coaching
as he believed it would.
Though he passed far too early at the age of 55, Pat’s positive
influence will be felt for many generations. Thus, we dedicate
this book to that inspirational figure and trust that it will
make a valuable addition to his legacy in coaching.
