TheUKconstructionindustryisbeingpulledindifferentdirections.Outlookformanycontractorsisuncertainasthe adventofanewfinancialyearheraldstherealstartofthegovernment'spublicsectorcutbacks.Theprivatesector ismakingmorepositivesoundsbutthereisstillalaginbringingprojectstomarket.Atthesametimetherehave beensoaringinputcostsasglobaluncertaintiesandimprovingdemandsendcommoditypricesupwards. Theseconflicting signalsare resultingincontractorssubmittingpricesthatare evenmore difficultto predict than ever. (cid:1) Davis Langdon tender index shows that tender prices have fallen approximately 2.5% over the last 12 months (cid:1) Buildingcostspulledindifferentdirectionswithlabourratesfrozenandmaterialspricesrising.Buildingcosts havebeenrisingsteadilysince2009–anincreaseof3.5%overthelastyearandprojectedtorisebetween 5%and4.5%overthenext2years (cid:1) Consumer price inflation is at twice government target and forecast to go higher before heading back towardstargetin2012 (cid:1) Manufacturinginputcostsatveryhighlevelsbutoutputpricesunabletomatchinputcostincreases (cid:1) Steelpriceincreasespushconstructionpricestowardsmuchhigherlevelsofinflation (cid:1) Morewageagreementsfrozenalthoughbuildersawaitpossiblenewsettlement (cid:1) Constructionearningsstillfallingbutredundanciesdeclining. The prime purpose of the Materials Costs/Measured Work Prices part is to provide industry average prices for mechanical and electrical services, giving a reasonably accurate indication of their likely cost.
