English, we aim to introduce the learner to the basic features of oral communication. As it is known that speech is a form of communication performed orally, the units of this course will help the learners to understand some of the basic issues of conversation in English.
When we talk with someone, we actually make use of certain social norms and rules, which may vary from situation to situation. Our conversation is essentially a speech act that takes place in a particular situation or a setting. Every day, we confront multiple situations that call for interactive conversation or even discussion. Most conversations tend to be in ones mother tongue but sometimes there are situations where one is also required to speak in English. Therefore, the course is a step towards preparing the learner for such situations when he or she will be required to use English. These situations may be either face-to-face or telephonic mode. When the learner is engaged in face to face mode of conversation or in telephonic conversation, he or she must remember that there are certain rules that one has to follow and use effectively.
