Fourdecadeslater,JeremyGunnhaswrittenwhatamountstoaripostetoBel- lah’soptimisticassessment.WhereBellahsawanobleiftroublednationalfaith transcendingparticulartheologies,Gunnpostulatesadarkercreed,anAmerican NationalReligionforgedduringtheColdWarandstillwithustoday.InGunn’s vision,thisreligionisastoolwiththreelegs,supportedequallybygovernmental theism,devotiontoamilitary“secondtonone,”andadoctrinairecommitmentto capitalismasfreedom.Citingchapterandverse,heshowshoweacharticleof faithwasassembledintoanideologicalconstructthathasbeennoeasiertochal- lengeinthemidstofnationaldisillusionmentwiththepost-September11warin IraqthanitwasduringtheColdWaratitsheight. Thegovernmentaltheismofthepostwarperiodmaybethebestknownofthe threespirituallegs.Rarely,however,haveitscomponentsbeensketchedsowell orputtogetherinsuchacompellingway.Fromtheenunciationofthecentrality of“faith”bytheleadingpoliticiansofthedaytotheapplicationof“God”toany andallavailablecoinsandpledges,thereisnoquestionthatAmericawasdeter- minedtocasttheconflictwithcommunismasareligiouscrusade.
