Above all is the Holy Spirit who guided and showed me many things over a period of twelve years. I thank the Lord for His love and protection, the many saints who consented to have their experiences shared in this manual for all to benefit, and the leaders who contributed to the total understanding of this necessary area of ministry. Pioneers such as Don Basham, Win Worley, Frank and Ida Mae Hammond, Dr. Rebecca Brown, Elaine Lee, Bill Szubritsky, and Howard Pittman, to name a few, gave time and effort to share their knowledge and experiences. Special thanks to my wife, Beatrice, and my four children who sacrificed many hours and who worked to fill the gaps caused by my absence from family activities while writing this manual. We are fellow laborers in God´s kingdom. 6 Introduction Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. —Zechariah 4:6 Many churches shy away from the subject of deliverance or casting out demons. Some claim that by talking about the devil, we give him glory. Others are simply afraid of the subject. Still others don´t believe in evil spirits or in a personal Satan. Most speak largely out of ignorance and fear. This manual attempts to dispel unnecessary fear and to create a simple pattern which most Christians can follow. It was originally intended to be a study outline for the saints at Light of the World Missions. As the text grew in volume, we began to realize that the manual would be useful to many churches and, therefore, modified the text to present a broader spectrum of the subject matter. Such a manual really has no end, since God is almost daily adding new knowledge. Casting out demons is not new to the church—just forgotten. God is restoring deliverance to the body of Christ today, so we need a knowledge of deliverance and spiritual warfare. 7 8 Spiritual Warfare One night several years ago, three elders approached me with the news that God had appointed me the teacher of the church. "Well, God hasn´t said anything to me" I replied. The next morning, as I knelt to pray, I suddenly had a vision. I found myself sitting in the last row in an auditorium filled with soldiers in combat uniforms. I saw myself walk down the aisle to the front and then stand behind a podium. Three men were standing to my left. Suddenly, I heard a voice say, "Son, I´ve called you to teach my army." Since then, God has confirmed my calling many times through various prophets and visions. At the time, I was already deeply involved in the deliverance ministry. My wife and I often cast out demons and healed the sick—we gained our knowledge through hit and miss, failures as well as successes. God revealed many things to us and we grew by leaps and bounds. It was exciting to see angels and hear the Holy Spirit as He guided us through the battles. As time went on, we began to read about the experiences of others and were often delighted to find that they had received many identical revelations and insights. We learned much from others in the deliverance ministry. Deliverance is a wave that cannot be stopped because it is of God. It is here to stay. Eleven years ago, I began to teach about spiritual warfare at least three times a week. Eventually, it took me to other churches and countries. In 1990, I put together a manual for use by the local church. It was an accumulation of the many outlines and sermons I had given in the past. This book is the end Introduction 9 result. Deliverance is not the sum total of the Christian walk. In the end, God will still look at the hearts and reins of men (Ps. 7:9). Love, humility, and truth will always be our standard and goal, but we need to go beyond the foundational principles of Christianity into perfection in Christ. This book will not perfect you. Only the Holy Spirit can lead you into all truth. But, it will help you in your walk with the Lord. I pray that you will never give up your quest to be like Him. Chapter One 1 Can Christians Have Demons? o deliverance ministers, the question, "Can Christians have demons?" is not even worth pondering. Experiences with thousands of deliverance sessions leave no doubt in my mind that Christians not only can, but do have demons. One famous teacher, Frank Hammond, says, "The question is not whether Christians can have demons, but rather, can I ever find a Christian without a demon?" People stand up during services and declare, "I don´t have a demon!" Yet the demon of Pride is manifested all over their faces. T I suspect that most opposition to deliverance comes out of either fear or pride. People who fear demons and the very thought of the devil don´t want to be involved. To disguise that fear, they advance an array of doctrines or Scripture to prove either that demons do not exist, or that Christians cannot have them. If their fear is too 10 Can Christians Have Demons? 11 great, no amount of persuasion will convince them otherwise. Pride comes in when a denomination or church has officially adopted a "no demons in Christians" stance. It ´s difficult to change doctrines or positions once you have taken a public stance. No one wants to admit errors in doctrine if it will threaten his reputation. "Face" becomes more important than truth. Occasionally, a church sits on the fence by declaring that Christians cannot have demons but conceding that demons can cling to the outside. A number of Scriptures are used to support the argument that Christians cannot have demons living in them. Some quote 2 Corinthians 6:14, which says, "What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" Actually, the Bible does not say it cannot happen. It merely says it should not happen. Jesus supped with publicans, and saints fellowship with unbelievers so that the light can defeat the darkness. Some saints reason that demons cannot live in the body because it is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19). But we find that the temple in Old Testament days was divided into three main sections: outer court, Holy Place, and Holy of Holies. In Moses´ tabernacle, anyone could enter the outer court, even foreigners. The Holy Spirit dwelt in the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. Similarly, I believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in our spirits or hearts (Eph. 3:17; 2 Pet. 1:19), the demons in our bodies. In Acts 5:3, Peter said to Ananias, "why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?" 12 Spiritual Warfare In Ezekiel, the prophet dug a hole in the wall of God ´s temple and found a door through which he entered. He saw "every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about" (Ezek. 8:10). Demons existed in God´s temple. Others claim that when we become Christians, we are cleansed of all demons. The Bible does not say that. It says that our sins are washed away by the blood, but does not mention demons. It is true, however, that demons cannot "possess" us. Unfortunately, the King James Version of the Bible uses an incorrect word. The correct word in the Greek is "demonization," or having demons. Possession implies total control. Demons cannot possess us, but we can possess demons. A quick fix for the issue is the contention that demons can only cling on from the outside. However, the Bible does not say that Jesus and the disciples "brushed off," "rubbed off," or "chased away" demons. Instead, the Bible consistently says, "cast out." "Cast out" clearly indicates that demons were "in." To get something out, it has to first be in. Theological arguments must give way to experience. Even scientists are known to abandon pet theories when actual experiences do not support them. Over 99% of the people I have delivered have been born-again tongue- speaking Christians, including many charismatic pastors. If you do not believe that Christians can have demons, I suggest you attend a number of deliverance sessions. Don´t pass judgment until you have investigated the Can Christians Have Demons? 13 matter thoroughly. It is important to know the truth in these end times. If demons can reside in the human body, then they need to be cast out! Chapter Two 2 Satan´s Kingdom Exposed here is a definite progression in the way the Bible exposes Satan´s kingdom. I believe this emphasizes the tremendous importance and responsibility given to Christians in the end times to destroy the demonic kingdoms of this world. T The Old Testament reveals very little about demons in the plural. Most references are directed to singular spirits or Satan himself. For instance, Genesis chapter three and Job chapters one and two refer to one serpent or spirit. When Saul rebelled against God´s commandments, one evil spirit went to torment him (1 Sam. 16:14, 23). Again, a single lying spirit deceived the four hundred prophets who transgressed against God by prophesying on behalf of Ahab, a sinful king (1 Kings 22:22). There are no indications of a demonic kingdom or hordes of evil spirits. When Jesus began His ministry, He set free many people who were tormented by demons. He 14 Satan´s Kingdom Exposed 15 accomplished many of His healings by casting out the spirit of Infirmity (Matt. 4:24; 8:16, 28; 9:33; 1222; 15:22; Mark 1:27; 3:11; 5:13; 7:26; Luke 4:33, 36; 6:18; 7:21; 8:2; 10:20; 11:14). Never before had any prophet or man of God cast out demons like Jesus did. His ministry represented a significant departure from anything mentioned in the Old Testament. In fact, the closest thing to deliverance in the Old Testament appears in 1 Samuel 16:23. David played his harp and the evil spirit tormenting Saul departed. Through the Gadarean incident, Jesus began to show us that: (1) Satan´s hordes are almost countless; (2) many demons can inhabit a human body; (3) demons can cause a person to have superhuman physical strength; (4) when a person is infested with foul spirits, many times they cause him to live in foul places or conditions; (5) even though extremely demonized, a person can have cogent and lucid moments; (6) demons can talk back and resist being cast out; (7) demons have intelligence; (8) demons desire to be in a fleshly body, even an animal´s; (9) demons fall under a line of authority within geographical limits and are afraid of being in another strongman´s territory; (10) demons know the Word of God. The demons knew what the Word says about the end when they will be consigned to the pit (Rev. 20:1, 3). They also knew Jesus was the Son of God (Mark 5:7). Overall, Jesus began to reveal our real enemy— Satan and his evil hordes of demons. Never before had man fully understood that the enemy is within.
