NNaatitoinaolnScaieln ceSMcusieuemnce Museum Mem. Nutn. Sci.Mus., Tokyo. {24),December 1. 1991 Spider sfrom the Northernmost Areas of Hokkaido, Japan By Hirotsugu ONo', Ken-ichi KuMADA", Miyoshi SADAMoTo'*' and Eiichi SHINKAI"" 4xes ge nda ・j f' ei M. =..-" ・ ,fi )t ELR"' ・ Sf hi *-""' : dttugt ki"matti `tD n7j E me The faunistica lstudy of spiders in Hokkaido, the northernrnost main island of Japan, has been poorly accomplished in comparison with that in Honshu and Kyushu. Two hundred sixty-five species ofspiders were liste dby YAGINuMA (1977 )flr'o mHokkaido, but these may only be about one-third ofthe estimated number ofthe species really occurring there. Besides ,most records were rnade on the basi sof specimens collected in the central and southern parts of the island. With the recent progress ofthe researches made by Russian arachnologists, spiders ofvarious familie sfrom the neighboring regions ef Hokkaido, namely Siberia .Sakhalin, Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands ,have been studied on a reliable basis (EsKov ,1980-, TANAsEviTcH, 1987-, MARu・slK. 1986-,OvTsHARENKo & MARuslK, 1988,ZyuzlN & MARus]K, 1989,WEsot:owsKA & MARuslK, 1990,MARuslK & CuTLER, 1989,ONo, MARuslK & LoGuNov, 1990,MIKHArLov, 1990-, LoGuNov & MARusiK, 1990, and many others). Lying in the northeastern edge of Eurasia, Hokkaido possesses a great significance frem the viewpoint of faunistic sand zoogeogra- phy of spiders. In the course of the Syntheti cResearche son the Natural Histor yof the Japanese Islands made by the National Scienc eMuseum, Tokyo, the presen tauthors carried out a research trip to the northernmost part of Hokkaido in July 1990 in order to collect materials for the faunistical and zoogeographical studies ofspiders in Hokkaido. During the research, about 2,4oo individ- uals of spiders weTe collected in various places selected. Though zoogeographical analysis has not been sufflciently performed with these materials, some importan ttaxonomical results, includ- ing discovery of some new species, were obtained. This puper reports these results as well as the 'Department of Zoology, National Science Museum, Tokyo N.LLNtiif・va# lltlhetezblvegK "'t99, Katakura-ch6, Kanagawa-ku. Materials and Methods All the specimens used in this paper with the exception of those for comparison were collected by the presen tauthors from 10th to 18th July 1990 in the selected areas of the northernmost parr of Hokkaido, The collecting sites plotted on Fig. 1 are presented in the fbllows:A-H, Rishiri Island; I-O, Wakkanai-shi; P, S6ya-gun;Q-U, alphabetical signs as Esashi-gun; V-Y, Teshio-gun. -A, Mt. As sho-'n in Table l ,168 species (ofthe s7e7 are new to the spider fauna ofthe northernmost part of Hokkaido) were recognized as the results of the present research. These are the northernmost records of distributio nof those species in Japan. Though the nurnber of the species know'n from this area reaches a total of 200, the materials may not be sufTlcient for a zoogeographical analysis.
