Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s Counties 1 So. Maryland, So Good Equine Guide This booklet is produced by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC). Through a layered and multifaceted strategy, SMADC seeks to preserve environmental resources while keeping the region’s farmland productive and the agricultural economy vibrant. SMADC’s mission is to develop and enhance a market-driven and sustainable farming future. SMADC’s goals are as follows: 1) thriving, market-driven farms that have the resources they need to be profitable, 2) a Maryland where farmland preservation and environmental stewardship positively impact the quality of our air and water and protect one of our greatest assets, the Chesapeake Bay, and 3) a future where profitable farms play an integral role in the health and quality of life of our community. Welcome to the third edition of the So. Maryland, So Good Equine Guide for Southern Maryland. The equine guide, the first publication of its kind in Southern Maryland, highlights the region’s growing equine community and brings together resources for established farms as well as information for those who may be getting involved with horses for the first time. Listings include a comprehensive, five-county directory of equine businesses in Southern Maryland that offer a wide variety of horse-related activities, plus hay producers, tack shops, farriers, vets and other equine support resources for horses, their owners, equine businesses and budding horse enthusiasts. What is So. Maryland, So Good? So. Maryland, So Good is a campaign designed by SMADC to help consumers identify true Southern Maryland products and buy accordingly. By building a direct link between buyers and growers in the five Southern Maryland counties and promoting the advantages of buying local, SMADC hopes to help keep farming vibrant and vital in Southern Maryland. As a consumer, you have a unique opportunity to help preserve Southern Maryland’s rural charm by supporting our local farms and waterways. Always look for the So. Maryland, So Good logo at stores and restaurants and ask for Southern Maryland products where you shop and dine. Visit www.smadc.com for more information on this and other programs administered by SMADC. Did you know? • According to a recent survey* of 1,000 Maryland households,14.5 percent have family members who ride or actively attend equestrian events, and nearly 50 percent have an interest in horse riding and other horse-related activities. (*Maryland Policy Choices, Schaefer Center for Public Policy, 2012) • The equine industry is a thriving component of Southern Maryland’s agricultural community and contributes significantly to the region’s economy. According to the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) 2010 Census, there are approximately 17,000 horses and over 30,000 acres and 3,000-plus equine places dedicated specifically to equine endeavors in the region. What do the asterisks mean? Throughout the first section of the guide (Equine Establishments and Stables by County), an asterisk indicates a stable licensed by the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB). Not all equine operations are required to be licensed. To learn more, visit the MHIB website at mda.maryland.gov/horseboard. 5 SSoo..
