Description:This survey encapsulates papers prepared by the Democracy and Governance Research Program of the Human Sciences Research Council on a range of critical governance issues facing the postapartheid state as the country attempts to deepen democracy and to deliver basic services to the electorate. Based on research conducted as part of the government’s 15-year review of governance and administration, the papers focus on three issues: public sector anticorruption, local government restructuring and capacity, and the role of traditional leadership in postapartheid governance.
