Website: www.africanbookscollective.com The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is an independent organisation whose principal objectives are to facilitate research, promote research-based publishing and create multiple forums geared towards the exchange of views and information among African researchers. All these are aimed at reducing the fragmentation of research in the continent through the creation of thematic research networks that cut across linguistic and regional boundaries. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), South Africa’s statutory research agency, conducts research that generates critical and independent knowledge relating to all aspects of human and social development. Poverty alleviation and public policy development and implementation are central to all its research activities. Its research extends beyond South Africa’s borders through projects and collaborations in other African countries. The HSRC’s collaborative approach to research enables interaction with research experts in South Africa, elsewhere in Africa, and internationally. This research project is conducted within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by CODESRIA and the HSRC to work in partnership to advance debate and social investiga- tion in Africa. One of the themes of the joint programmes for research, is the role of South Africa in Africa and the role of foreign Africans in South Africa. The ‘South Africa in Africa’ research project investigates the reciprocal political and economic impact of South Africa in Africa. South Africa’s role is contextualised within the global experience of regional powers, and the roles of South African government, business, labour and civil society are interrogated. The research project also reflects on the gap that often exists between perceptions of South Africa’s role, and the actual realities of South Africa’s engagements. One way of addressing this gap is the combined effort of CODESRIA and the HSRC to provide empirically grounded, historical, comparative and theoretical research into South Africa’s relations with the continent. This investigation into the political and economic dimensions of reciprocal relations between South Africa and other African states and economies will not only fa- cilitate a better understanding of intra-African relations, but also lay the basis for policy recommendations for realising the negation of unequal relations between South Africa and other countries of the continent. A challenge to the scholar and activist of South Africa and Africa, however, is that the above issues are not consolidated into a sub-theme of any particular discipline but dispersed across different disciplines in political science, anthropology, sociology, economics and geography, to mention only some. This can pose a big and even insurmountable chal- lenge to those who would like to investigate a particular aspect of South Africa’s relations with the region, particularly practitioners and scholars 1 Annotated Bibliography: 1994–2008 in less resourced parts of Africa. The aim of the annotated bibliography is to provide such scholars and practitioners with a consolidated list of some of the material available in this area of research and analysis. It is not comprehensive but should go some way towards providing the references for relevant sources of information. The annotated bibliography focuses on the post-Apartheid period as an important and particular historical period for South Africa’s continental relations. (A few entries pre-date this period but help to contextualise the references provided in the annotated bibliography.) The annotated bibliography is organised into seven sections: I. South Africa, Africa and Global Relations; II. Conceptualising South Africa as an Actor in Africa; III. Governance, Security, Peace Building; IV. Trade and Corporate Expansion; V. Social Movements. VI. The Politics of Re- gionalism in Africa; VII. Gender and South Africa in Africa. CODICE (the CODESRIA Documentation and Information Centre) and researchers in the Democracy & Governance programme of the HSRC compiled the annotated bibliography. The CODESRIA database and other online databases have been used for the production of this bibliography, including research outputs generated in the South Africa in Africa research project. The entries are organised alphabetically in the above seven themes. The selected documents are in English, with a few French entries. We hope that this bibliography will be useful and help to develop a network of scholars and practitioners in this area of investigation. 2 Part I South Africa, Africa and Global Relations Part I: South Africa, Africa and Global Relations 1.
