SUNDAY, JULY 16, 2017 SONGBIRD NOTCHES NYRA EYEING NIGHT RACING AT BELMONT by Bill Finley NINTH GRADE I WIN The New York Racing Association is working to have racing regulations changed so that it can begin to conduct racing at night at Belmont Park on a limited basis. According to NYRA President and CEO Chris Kay, a bill was passed last week in the New York Senate that would allow Belmont to race at night two days a week. The bill has not yet reached the New York State Assembly. The news of night racing at Belmont was revealed by Kay on this week=s Thoroughbred Daily News podcast, brought to you by Taylor Made. Kay said the impetus to begin racing at night was to attract new customers to Belmont, ones who may not be able to go during the day due to work obligations. Loping along through early fractions of :24.26, :48.36 and 1:12.63 under a motionless Mike Smith, the Fox Hill Farm runner was confronted by Martini Glass (Kitalpha) turning for home, but Smith still had not asked the Eclipse winner to run. The Hall of Fame pilot shook the reins at Songbird at the top of the stretch and she began to edge clear, but Martini Glass would not let her go that easy. The 21-1 shot kept on coming for the champion, forcing Smith to go to the whip--something he rarely does on this filly-- and Songbird held strong for a one-length victory. AShe=s not back to the barn yet, but she looks like she came off the racetrack good,@ winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer told the TDN when reached by phone shortly after the race. AThat is a difficult race for her to run, going a mile and a quarter, carrying 124 [pounds], so I was very proud of her. She did her job like she always does and that=s why we love her.@ As for her next start, the Hall of Famer said, AI=d like to enjoy this win and then I will get with Mr. [Rick] Porter and we will try to figure out another race for her. But look around at the towns and cities that have worked hard to preserve histo- ry—Colonial Williamsburg, Boston and Mackinaw Island come to mind—and you’ll find that doing so has proven to be a boon to tourism. No racing town does that better—nor profits more from it— than Saratoga Springs, New York, where the recently renovated Adelphi Ho- tel, which originally opened in 1877, is scheduled to once again take its place as the grande dame of Saratoga hotels. We talk to general manager Michel Ducamp about the project. We also travel to an- other famous spa town, France’s Vichy, where we take a peek at their summer racing festival; visit the new sustainable farm-to-table restaurant at Glorious Goodwood, Farmer Butcher Chef; and talk to Rick Pitino, whose yearly trips to Del Mar have proven both fun and prof- itable.
