My more intimate debts are to the people who have helped me to craft this work. Greg Dumont was the person who first saw this book for what it could be. My other colleagues at the University of Akron, including Ravi Krovi, Bill Baker, Marie David, Deborah Owens, Doug Hausknecht, and Bill Hauser, have fostered my growth as a writer and researcher more than any scholar deserves. The conversations with Yara Asad provided tremendous insight into the very human notions of contradiction and imperfection. Brian Sullivan and Steve Elson are true comrades and patriots who are willing to help at every turn. My great friends Paul Thomarios and Craig Vinkovich are always ready to share an intriguing thought. My mentor Tim Wilkinson has shown me the road ahead and, more importantly, how to best live it as a person of character. My parents instilled in me a sense of exploration from an early age and for this I am eternally grateful. My grandmother and sisters are the kinds of unconditional supporters one can only dream of. My long- time editor Jeff Olson knows instinctively how to manage my moods and fears. My children, Paul Bryan, and Alana, motivate me to leave behind a bet- ter world than the one I was blessed to inherit. And, finally, my wife Jacque- line is always at my side. vii P A R T 1 The Past In Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, there is the following exchange between the anti-hero Yossarian and the unwavering mind of military authority: Major Danby replied indulgently with a wide superior smile, “But, Yossarian, what if everyone felt that way?” “Then I’d certainly be a damned fool to feel any other way, wouldn’t I?” Through his distinct prose, Heller reveals to us that those who need or want to think for themselves will always be a minority. That the contrarian is always fighting an uphill battle against conventional wisdom. So might be the case of this book as well...
