In Social Studies this year, you will be studying Alberta. The course is divided into three topics: 1. Alberta - Its Geography and People (text: Alberta, OurProvince) 2. Alberta - Its People in History (text: Alberta-A Story ofthe Province andIts People) 3. Alberta -AComparative Study with Quebec (text: A Quebec Experience) In the first topic you will use maps ofdifferent kinds to find information. You will learn aboutAlberta's natural regions, natural resources, and industries. In the second topic, you will study how Alberta became the way it is. You will also learn about some ofthe people who made important changes. In the last topic, you will find outhow Alberta and Quebec are alike and different. You will practice making decisions about questions and problems that affect our future. You will also practice looking at a problem from different points ofview before making a decision. Be sure you have all the textbooks listed above. The course contains twelve Art exercises, which should be sent in with the Social Studies lessons. At the start ofeach lesson, see ifthere is anArt exercise in the lesson, so that you and your supervisor can plan ahead and get the necessary materials. Be sure you have received The ElementaryArtBook, which will give you the information and suggestions needed to complete the exercises. Art projects which are not on flat paper (e.g. sculpture) might have to be mailed separately. If you are unable to mail these projects, please add a note for your marking teacher. Social Studies 4 -2- Introduction You will see that some questions can be corrected by you and your supervisor at home. Other exercises will be sent in to be marked by your Distance Learning teacher. Read instructions carefully, and watch for the SEND FOR CORRECTION signs at the bottoms ofpages. Those pages must always be sent in for correction. Below are two symbols (icons) that you will see occasionally in the margins ofyour lesson pages. ^ This icon tells you that you can check and correct the exercise ~g or questions you havejust completed. Read the written ^/ instruction beside the icon. The answers are located at the end ofeach lesson. Go over them with your supervisor. This icon suggests that you should get help from your supervisor for the question beside the icon. You might not need the help, but you should check with your supervisor. Answer spaces are provided for most questions. Ifyou need more space for an answer, you may use empty space near the answer lines or add paper ofyour own. The number ofanswer lines will give you some idea ofhow long an answer is expected. You should answer in complete sentences when there is enough space. However, when questions require listing or point form answers, orprovide only one answer line, you do not have to use complete sentences. Please note that the Social Studies course has fewer lessons than the other courses. However, each lesson contains seven or eight daily exercises, compared to five in the other subjects. Ifyou complete one exercise each day, you will finish the Social Studies course at about the same time as the other subjects. When you finish a Social Studies lesson, send it in with your next mailing ofother subjects. Help! Ifyou don't understand a question, you can call us free by dialing 310-0000 and asking for the Alberta Distance Learning Centre. Then ask for help with Grade 4 Social Studies. We hope you enjoy the course.
