Who Should Respond? 15 marks Work with a partnerto create a national orglobal appeal to respond to a selected issue. Present your appeal in an audio format. The audio deliverywill be individually marked. 1. Select a current issue making headlines in the media. This may be a crisis, a natural disaster, ora report on the social conditions ofa particulargroup of people. It should correspond to one ofthe following contemporary global issues and pose a potential high risk to the economic stability, peace and security, and/or self-determination ofa people: • climate change and the environment • spread ofdisease and pandemics • access to and control overwater • poverty and debt • hungerand food security • human rights abuses • conflict Save a copy ofthe media headlines (minimum three headlines) and reports (including posting or publication dates related to the selected issue) in your Portfolio. 2. Research the issue. Using a search engine, select a minimum ofthree different sources that provide background and perspectives on the issue. Save a copy ofthe selected sources in your Portfolio. 3. Research the complexity ofaddressing this issue. Identify the tools and obstacles citizens and national governments possess to respond to the global issue. Create a two-column chartto record your information. Label one column "Tools" and the other column "Obstacles." a. Identify the tools they possess to respond to the global issue; for example, a tool might be the presence of local highly qualified medical experts. b. Identify the obstacles they face in responding; for example, an obstacle might be the reluctance to seek medical support because ofthe cost ofa visitto the doctor. 4. Reflect on the tools and obstacles. Evaluate ifthe capacity ofthe nation's citizens and government is great or limited. State your conclusion at the end ofyour chart.
