Recently, empiricalresearchonsociallearningtheoryhasbeenextendedtofocuson drinkingbehavioramongtheelderly. Thisstudyprovidesatestofsociallearning theorybyexaminingthesubstantiveissueofdrinkingbehavior. Aspartofalargerstudyofalcoholconsumptionamongtheelderly,face- to-faceinterviewswereconductedon218respondentsaged60andoverinthe ageheterogeneouscommunityofAlachuaCounty,Florida. Respondentswere interviewedonayearlybasisoverathree-yearperiodconcerningtheirdrinking practices,socialrelationships,personalperceptions,andattitudesabout IX drinking. Structuralequationmodelingshowsthat,overtime,sociallearning theoryexplainsasignificantportionofthevarianceassociatedwithdrinking behavioroftheelderly(86percent). Thestabilityofdrinkingbehavioramongthe elderlyislargelyafunctionofthestabilityofsociallearningfactors. Results demonstratethatsociallearningvariablesarebetterpredictorsofcurrent drinkingbehaviorthaneveninformationconcerningpastdrinkingbehavior. x
