It builds on the success of the pasteditions, heldinEnschede,The Netherlands in2006,andinKendal,UK in 2007.On behalf of the OrganizingCommittee, we would like to welcome you to EuroSSC 2008, in Zurich, Switerland. This volume contains the invited papers and technical peer-reviewedpapers selected for presentation at the conference. At EuroSSC we aim to explore technologies, algorithms, architectures, pro- tocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings, cooper- ating intelligent objects, and their applications. Since its inception, EuroSSC has taken a complementary technology-driven and user-driven view to discuss these aspects. It is one of the particularities of EuroSSC, and the 2008 edition madenoexception.Inadditionweemphasizedaspectsrelatedto qualityofcon- text and context-aware feedback by actuator systems. This reflects the growing importance that context processing in uncertain environments and sensor and actuator networks take in ambient intelligence environments. We received 70 paper submissions. They originate from 30 countries of Eu- rope, the Middle East and Africa (66%), Asia (22%), North America (9%), and South America (3%). These numbers reflect the European origins of EuroSSC, but also show that EuroSSC is a recognized and attractive platform for partici- pants from all regions of the world. The review process was double-blind. This ensured that the papers were selected purely on their technical merits. Each paper received a minimum of two reviews, with most receiving three reviews and some four. On the basis of the peer reviews, the ProgramCo-chairsselected17papers for publication. The 25% acceptance rate indicates the high quality of the papers included in this proceedingsvolume. The paperswereselectedaccordingtotheir technicalmerit toexemplarilydiscussthekeythemesaddressedbyEuroSSC:sensorsandsignal acquisition; context inference; high-level context processing; and applications and scenarios. WeinvitedAlainCrevoisier, researcherattheUniversityofAppliedSciences, Yverdon, Switzerland, to give an invited paper presentation. Sensing being the first requirement of context-aware systems, he discussed how daily life objects can be turned into tactile interfaces, on the basis of his activities in the de- velopment of new musical instruments, notably within the EU-funded research project ‘Tangible Acoustic Interfaces for Computer–Human Interaction’. Thethirdeditionofaconferencecanarguablybeconsideredaturningpoint. This year saw a 35% increase in paper submissions since the last edition. We are satisfied to have received contributions from both Americas, and a steady butverysignificantcontributionfromAsia.Thismarkedincreaseinsubmissions and the increased diversity in the countries of origin (30 countries in 2008, 21 in 2007)shows that the conference has grownmore attractive. We are confident VI Preface that 2008 will be a successful milestone that will lead to future editions equally (and more!) successful. A peer-reviewed conference cannot exist without a community supporting it. As a conference is a place to share and discuss ideas, we would first like to thank all the 179 authors who took time to write and submit papers. We are extremelygratefulto the ProgramCommittee andthe additionalreviewerswho dedicated a lot of their valuable time to read, comment, rate and suggest ways to improve those papers. The peer-reviewing process is time consuming, but it is essential to ensure high-quality publications, and to provide constructive feedback and advice for the papers that could not be accepted. We would like to thank the authors of accepted papers for revising their papers according to the reviewers’ comments. We hope the review process helped those authors whose paper could not be accepted. In order to provide an opportunity for these authorsto presenttheir work,we organizeda poster paper session, with a delayed submission deadline, published in an adjunct proceedings with its own ISBN number. We are thankful to the supporting organizations that helped us with Eu- roSSC: the Institut fu¨r Elektronik and ETH Zu¨rich that supported this confer- encebyprovidingtheinfrastructure,theSpringerLNCSstaff,theIEEECommu- nicationsSocietyfortheirtechnicalco-sponsorship,andtheEUprojectSENSEI andSensinodeLtd.fortheirfinancialsupport.Ourgratitudealsoextendstothe numerous volunteers who helped us during the organizationof this conference.
